Wraithfarers

The Wraithfarers are a organisation affiliated with the Kingdom of Garka and travel into foreign territory to reclaim the undead from their masters. Though the practise of necromancy was forbidden after the Wars of Torment, mages continued to stretch the limits of their magic. Curiosity overcomes some, but most dabble in this dark art to gain insight and command over a loyal army, who have already lost everything.   Their task is to find stray or still-subservient wraiths and bring them to Garka, where they can live away from enslavement or persecution. The legion consists entirely of wraith troops, endorsed by the state to do their work.

Structure

Unlike most governmental or military organisations in the Kingdom of Garka, the Wraithfarers serve as their own Bonemasters. Independence from the aether is critical in missions beyond Garka, since fellow Wraiths are hard to find and wayward mages are willing to exploit them.   The legion of Wraithfarers has 5,250 members, each being divided into squads of 20 wraiths. They report to the squad leader, who leads local searches. The Wraithfarers report to kingdom court officials who help register and initiate those they find in the foreign reaches.

Public Agenda

The Wraithfarers main objective is to enforce the wraith quarantine and herd their people to the Kingdom of Garka. They accept wraiths created by necromancers when they are apprehended and have special permission to scour battlefields for their people. Their squads regularly inspect graveyards for those who've lost their way and bring them back to a nation they'll be welcome.   They also assist in gaining custody over wraiths, should they have a master. Wraithfarers, if they come across violations, also enforce the rights of the risen.

Assets

The Wraithfarers have forts on the border of the Kingdom of Garka where they keep Wraiths for processing. There are more of these along their borders with Alain than with Gildegan to the north. These are maintained through public taxes.   Since Wraithfarers connect to each other to sustain their aether, they need to conserve as energy as possible. To avoid disassembling on their travels, they use wraith horses to travel into foreign lands. They don't need to eat, but do carry aether rations to keep their reserves high. Sometimes they also need extra reserves to revitalise abandoned or exploited wraiths.

History

The Wraithfarers are older than the Kingdom of Garka, established to assist in the immigration process. The current system, primarily orchestrated by mages, relied on their good will to give up their expendable personal armies. Dissatisfied by this approach, a group of wraiths sought out their kin by themselves, even braving the last skirmishes of the war.   The Wraithlord of Garka, once coronated, honoured these volunteers for their service and founded the Wraithfarers as it is today. Though they were allowed to retire, the wraiths continued their work and passed on their expertise to the following generations.
