Philip V
King Philippe de France
Philip V lived an exalted life in France before his reign as king of Spain. When Charles II of Spain died, Philip was the closest living relative by blood to take the throne in 1700 at the age of 18.
After a long Royal Council meeting in France at which the Dauphin was in favor of his son's rights, it was agreed that Philip would ascend the throne, but he would forever renounce his claim to the throne of France for himself and his descendants. Philip was announced king of Spain by the Spanish ambassador (which was said in Spanish, a language that Philip did not understand).
Philip was an unpopular King at his time. He tended to show favoritism to France in matters, which was expected, but not satisfactory to the people he ruled over. However, he was the longest reigning monarch in modern Spanish history with a total of 41 years.
Philip V favored and promoted the Atlantic trade of Spain with its American possessions. During this Atlantic trade emerged important figures of the naval history of Spain, among which stands out the corsair Amaro Pargo . Philip V frequently benefited the corsair in his commercial incursions and corsairs: he granted a Royal order given at the Royal Palace of El Pardo in Madrid in September 1714, in which he appointed him captain of a commercial ship bound for Caracas.
