Plains

heart of the land

The Plains is a vast swath of grassland that encompasses most of the former Kingdom of Pinar. In recent years, the name Sea of Planting has been designated to cover the portion of the Plains under Orc control, south of the road between Daverne and Meloria. However, "Sea of Planting" originally encompassed the entirety of the grassland; it was renamed the Plains by the conquering humans from the south.

Geography

The Plains extend from the base of the Fiery Summits in the west to the Evercana Mire in the east, and are bordered in the north by the River Melor and in the south by the sands of the Bonelands. It is bisected by the Ferlam River.   Originally, the Plains extended all the way to the Jade Sea. However, due to droughts in the far south, the Plains have shrunken as the Bonelands has grown. Some believe that the drastic change is at least in part due to human methods of farming, which rip up the grasses that hold the rich planting soil down. Others believe that this is a completely natural change, and that the world is destined to eventually become completely desert.   The most striking part of the Plains to newcomers is the density of color in the spring and summer; waves of blues, greens, and purples show exactly why this area was named a Sea by its Orcs.   In the north of the region, the Plains bleeds over the river Melor and towards the Dread Forest, losing many of its hills. Several major settlements can be found here, including Meloria, Daverne, and Bastion; other, much smaller settlements could also be found farther south, but are few and far between.

Fauna & Flora

While many things have changed in recent years, some plants and animals of old still call the Plains home. Foremost among these are rabbits, goats, wild pigs, bison, and many species of bird, all of which are often hunted by those Orcs who still live in their Sea.   The flora of the region is primarily grasses and short shrubs or trees. However, older Orc settlements used saplings from the Dread Forest as windbreaks for centuries, and some of these saplings have survived until the present day.

Natural Resources

For many years, the humans warred against the Orcs in order to secure the small village of Meloria, which sat over a large pocket of iron ore and other precious metals. Its construction out of these metals over time has earned Meloria the name of the City of Metal, although the mines beneath it are no longer functional.   In addition to ore deposits, the Plains boasts rich farmland, which at the peak of the kingdom was used to feed nearly all of Pinar. Unfortunately, the constant warfare and resentment between the races grew to a crescendo, and now a portal to the Infernal Planes can be found in its northern city of Meloria.
