Oghma the Binder

the Wise God

Oghma, the Binder of What is Known, is a god of truth, knowledge and dissemination of that knowledge. He is also widely known as a patron of bards, and one of the gods of Invention along with Gond and Deneir. His followers are expected to pursue knowledge in any form that interests them, and to teach that knowledge when called upon to do so. As such, many of his followers work as teachers, some fixed in one place and some that wander. To Oghma's devout, all books that contain information about the world are considered holy, and to destroy or hide them is a heinous crime.     His symbol is a blank scroll, which in Meloria is often wrought in silver. His temple, the Binder's Scroll, also functions as a public library; anyone, regardless of status, beliefs, or class, may enter the temple and read any of the several thousand books the library currently holds. Its collection ranges from works of fiction and manuals for various kinds of work, to histories of the world at large and books of spells. The city of Meloria, while not allowed to tamper with the will of the god, restricts certain books (such as highly powerful spell books, catalogues of people with access to said books, and certain incendiary fiction) from being checked out by anyone not authorized to do so. However, acolytes often will work around this restriction, as Oghma's creed requires them to teach any who would be taught, and he admires ingenuity. The second month of the year, Hama, is named after him, and is when a census is usually conducted.
