Philosopher's Stone

The philosopher's stone is the magnum opus of alchemy. It is a legendary substance thought capable of turning base metals into silver and gold and producing an elixir of life to promote rejuvenation and immortality. However, the truth of the matter is that the philosopher's stone can do much more than any of that.

Transmutation

The philosopher's stone is capable of altering the molecular structure of any given material. As long as the holder understands the chemical makeup of both the substance they're working with and the substance they want to produce, they can transmute it between the two at will. Transmutations must follow the Law of Conservation of Mass, so atomic size must also be taken into account. The stone cannot, however, transmute organic compounds (hydrocarbons, etc.) or synthetic elements (atomic numbers 95-118). Whether this is due to natural restrictions or operator ignorance is currently unknown.

Earthen Manipulation

In addition to transmuting elements, the philosopher's stone also allows its holder to freely control, shape, and manipulate the earth and "earthen" elements around them. This includes all minerals and mineral compositions regardless of their state (mountain, boulder, sand or dust), dirt, soil, etc. They also can't be harmed by anything made from earthen elements. A sword made of steel will bend around them, or a bullet made of lead will harmlessly "splat" against them when it hits. The holder has to stay in contact with the earth for this to work, though, and they can only use earthen materials that are accessible in the area.

Alkahest

Perhaps the most dangerous aspect of the philosopher's stone is its ability to produce alkahest, the universal solvent. Alkahest can eat through and dissolve just about any known substance, organic or inorganic. The stone doesn't produce alkahest freely, though, only on rare occasions, such as when its or its holder's existence is being threatened.

Manufacturing process

The overall process of creating a philosopher's stone is unknown, but it has been repeatedly stated to be broken down into four phases:
  1. nigredo, a blackening or melanosis
  2. albedo, a whitening or leucosis
  3. citrinitas, a yellowing or xanthosis
  4. rubedo, a reddening, purpling, or iosis

Philosopher's stones are extremely rare, to the point that even the most well-learned magic users doubt they even exist. To date, there have been only two confirmed instances of a philosopher's stone's existance.
