Fairy Fungi

Fairy fungi is a fungal infection that originated from the wings of Feromone Fairies. The disease is unique to Farland and its nearby surroundings, where the fairy farmers live.
Only humans have been affected by the fungi and is extremely common among Feromone Fairy farmers. It seems to have no effect on the fairies.
It is not uncommon to see fairy farmers with scratch marks on their arms and face, due to long term infection. The infection will not be subdued without a cure.

Transmission & Vectors

The fungi grow in the Feromone Fairy Dust from the wings of Feromone Fairies' and spread when the dust is released from their wings, either when flying or when harvested by the fairy dust farmers. When the dust comes in contact with human skin the fungi start infecting the skin.
Although direct contact with the fungi appears to be the only way to become infected, it is technically airborne, as there's a lot of fairy dust in the air in and around Farland, where the fairy farms are. This makes the infection very common among farlanders, but the disease is unique to the region, and great care has been taken for it not to spread outside the village.

Causes

The poor living conditions of captive Feromone Fairies is the primary cause of fairy fungi. A lack of cleanliness and living space means that a lot of different fungi have good living conditions in the fairy cages.
It is believed that the fungi came into existence when dust from the fairy wings came into contact with fairy droppings, for an extended period of time.

Symptoms

Symptoms range from Mild to severe itching, depending on the level of infection. Temporary blue spots that are moderately itchy, is the most obvious symptom of the infection.

Treatment

In the earliest stages of infection, washing the infected area is enough to stop the spread. It can be hard to identify or even realize one is infected, as the itching may not be much more noticeable than an average itch until it is too late.
At this point, the cure is needed, as the human body is not able to resist the fungi on its own.
To create the cure, one needs to mix dust from a free and healthy fairy with some fresh clean water.
The cure must be applied to the infected skin, which will reduce the itching. If applied three times a day over a week, the symptoms will subside.
The cure does not make one immune to reinfection, although it appears to grant some levels of resistance.

Prognosis

Stage One

After coming into contact with the dust, the skin will occasionally itch, but there's no visible signs of the infection. Simply scratching the area seems to alleviate the symptoms temporarily, which is why the infection is rarely detected at this stage.

Stage Two

After around six hours, small light blue dots will start to appear on the skin. These dots are small clusters of the fungi and are quite itchy. Scratching these are slightly painful and will do nothing to alleviate the itching, but will help the fungi spread.

Stage Three

After a day, the disease enters the final stage. The spots will begin to disappear, as the fungi start to submerge into the skin. When there are no more blue spots, it means that the fungi will no longer spread, but it also means that the fungi now has deep roots under the skin, and is extremely hard to get rid of, short of removing the skin.
The skin will no longer be constantly itchy, instead, random attacks of severe itchiness occur, and the frequency varies greatly from person to person, but averages at about six times a day. Scratching the area slightly alleviate the itch, but as long as an attack is ongoing, it will be extremely itchy when not scratched. This often has the added consequence of giving the infected a lot of scratch marks on the infected areas.

Prevention

Short of staying away from Feromone Fairies in captivity, or giving Farland a wide berth, taking a long bath whenever you feel itchy, is the only way to ensure you don't get infected.
Wearing clothing that cover most of the body can also be helpful, but the spores can linger in the clothes and should be cleaned immediately after use.

History

Fairy Fungi, didn't appear among Humans until after they started to farm the Feromone Fairies.
For many years, fairy farmers had to accept that fairy fungi were part of the job, and most fairy farmers had scratch marks on their bodies, especially on the arms and in the face.
After it was discovered that the disease only spread from fairies in captivity, it became apparent that the best place to find a cure was among the free fairies in Feromone Forest.
It turned out that just as the infected dust from the captive, thus unhealthy fairies, caused the disease, dust from the healthier and free fairies held the cure.
This created a dilemma. On one hand, the fairy farmers were trying to eradicate free fairies, to eliminate the risk of them fighting back, but on the other hand, they had to rely on dust from free and healthy fairies, to create a cure. The alternative was to grant the captive fairies substantially better-living conditions, which would be more costly and significantly less efficient.
This resulted in some of the larger farms, with support from The Freeport Trade Confederation, hiring fairy hunters, to gather dust from healthy fairies.
