The gnomish community of Mount Comignolo

Also called the Ingeneer's Hamlet, the gnomish community has moved to the area of the caldera of Mount Comignolo from the slums of Saythian, following an agreement between the Revolutionary Committee and a group of gnomish inventors unhappy for their living conditions in the outskirts of the city.

Naming Traditions

Feminine names

They follow the generic indication of gnomic feminine names. For example, Clubbel, Gladderil, Fidderban, Eglellia.

Masculine names

Even masculine names follow the general custom of gnomish communities elsewhere. Common male names are Klaus, Balkur, Klamastell, Efferkin.

Family names

Most family names in this community have some reference to Fire or Sparkles, referring to mind acumen but not only, considering the proximity to the inactive volcano.

Culture

Major language groups and dialects

The official language is Saythian, but Gnomish and Common language are frequently spoken.

Culture and cultural heritage

The cultural heritage of the gnomes of Mount Comignolo is composed by a large number of small inventions that have improved productivity in the Saythian Republic. Many of those inventions have started to diffuse in other part of the continent, but the Republic receives them first and can use them in secret for several years before them would become diffuse elsewhere.

Shared customary codes and values

At the base of this community lies the agreement signed by the former Revolutionary Committee of Saythian and the leader of the gnomish community that stated that the community "agrees to provide the country with inventions that will give an edge in the struggles present and future" and in change the country "will support the community with goods to grant a decent subsistence". The Revolutionary Committee is very grateful to the Ingeneer's Hamlet because their inventions, notably the dark seeds, have granted an edge during the struggle for indipendence from the Dragon Kingdom.

Average technological level

The most recent development of the community has been the Steam motor, a mechanism that through the development of pressure allows the movement of mechanism indipendently from animal traction.

Ideals

Beauty Ideals

The community accepts new members on the base of intelligence, therefore aesthetics aren't evaluated as really important. Physical appearance commonly associated with study and a sharp mind can be considered appealing, for example a spacious forehead, spectacles and under-eye circles, but only if supported by proved cleverness.

Gender Ideals

In the community there's very little gender diversification, everyone is expected to carry their own weight and in the free-time to work hard in the development of inventions and improvement of product to support Saythian technology.

Nice article. It seems like a pretty good deal that they are allowed to get the inventions first. After some years they are allowed to sell those inventions without issue or are there still restrictions then?

It has been a fairly recent deal and for the moment both sides are fairly happy because one gets fresh inventions and the other can concentrate on what they do better and receive a lot of respect that was denied to them while they used to live mingled with humans. I will have to decide what happens in the future and I don't exclude eventually some tension to arise between the two communities.

These guys sound very interesting. Do they have a monopoly on creating the dark seeds? great article :)

You should check out the The 5 Shudake, if you want of course.

At the moment it is a secret and they're the only ones who know how to produce it, but eventually, someone else will get there by trial-and-error (the errors will probably cause some disaster here and there)

A very nice article! I like that they don't make female gnomes wear long dresses or something ridiculous like that. :D That would be difficult to work in.

They may wear something fancy occasionally for important celebrations, but they are a very practical society. The appearance is not important for gnomes.

I like the gnomes a lot! They do seem quite practical. And definitely intelligent!

They sound like an interesting community. I like that there are not different expectations for the genders and that everyone is expected to pull their own weight.

I dream of a world where skills are what determine your path in life and not the way you look or your gender. At least in my fantasy I can do it!
