Press machine

During the development of a mechanized loom powered by a steam motor, a curious accident has brought to the development of a machine that allows a skilled individual to copy in short time a large number of pages by the impression of a set of metal characters. The developer elected to call it the Press.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

Adapted from a mechanic loom, the Press comprises presently 42 characters of lead, but further development is ongoing to improve this format, organized in 6 lines of 7 characters each. Each line has a pressing arm, operated by a lever and a selector, moved by the energy provided by a steam motor.

Significance

This machine, developed by the gnomish community of Mount Comignolo, drastically reduces the labour required to reproduce a book and may open the future to a capillary diffusion of knowledge.

Item type
Mechanical
Rarity

Originally created as a unique piece, the immediate interest of a few business in Saythian has pushed for the creation of other five machines. It is likely to get diffused rapidly, once the Pamphlet will begin to become common and if the companies will start to benefit from the new form of advertisement, much faster than word-of-mouth.

Raw materials & Components

The component are designed and created in the Enginner's Hamlet with material mostly imported from the Dwarven Kingdom. At the moment, the weight of the machine is a significant problem therefore experiments for the employement of some light-weight alloy have been started, but so far no results are available.

Ooh, great job! Hurrah for literacy rates improving in this world. I do have to say, it is kind of difficult for me to read the side bar, with the light lettering on the bright blue design. But maybe that's just me! Otherwise, I love this article. :D
