Riding messengers

Since the times of the Akharmur Empire, Phaldorya was serviced by the Akharmur Empire postal system a complex net of post stations along the roads, connected by riding messengers that would travel very fast between two stations several times in a day, transferring the messages between them. The Dragon Empire, already from its early, tried to restore this system and, although in the common understanding has kept its ancient name, it was one of the reasons of success of an empire of such a size. The wars that have divided the Dragon empire in national entities have downgraded significantly the importance of the postal service and its reliability, nevertheless a form of public postal service is present in every country.

Career

Qualifications

Are you asking me what it takes to join the Postal Service? Well, boy, you have to ride as fast as the lightning and be discreet. Even better, for your good, if you don't know at all what you are carrying. Yeah, laddy, the memory of a goldfish will be highly appreciated in a riding messenger!
— A senior post-officer in reply to questions about the job.

The qualifing skill for the job are, unsurprisingly, good riding skill and resistance. Discretion and ability to survive in the wilderness are bonus skill that, occasionally, can be very useful.

Career Progression

The riding messenger is usually the entry level in the postal service, requiring loads of energy and a high level of fitness. It does lead to a satisfactory career in the postal service, although a lot of officer will end over, aging, to manage a post station, a boring but easy and less adventurous job. The ones that can advance further in this career path will get involved in managing gradually larger areas and, eventually, get in the Ministery of post and communications.

Payment & Reimbursement

Considering the benefits of accommodation and meals that are included in the job, the salary is not bad for an entry level profession. Mostly because you end over saving most of the money you will earn, been terribly tired at the end of your shift.

Other Benefits

A riding messenger is expect to live at his post station and travel between another one rarely at a distance greater than thirty kilometers. Therefore they receive food and accommodation as part of the work package.

Perception

Purpose

Granting fast communication in a large empire is the a fundamental importance for its administration and this was clear for both the Akharmur and Dragon Empire, whose administations spent a lot of effort in keeping the postal service efficient. Once Dragon Empire has splitted in national organizations, a public postal service spreading through different countries, ofter in war with each other became uneffective. The recent period of peace has improved the condition of service for the postal service, although a lot of companies prefer now to employ private messengers as they have been used through the last centuries.

It's another idea I have collected from real history, empires such as Persian, Mongolian, and the far west colonization relied so strongly on an effective net of messenger that I have started to insert old post stations in backgrounds for my PCs... From there the step Is short.
