Sol (sol)

Sol is the twin sibling of Aiffus and is a Major Preservation God with a vast portfolio. He oversees half of the cycle of Life and Death with his brother Aiffus; in addition, he holds dominion over fertility, birth ceremonies, divination and healing, both magic and natural. Seen by mortals as being a literal paragon of their own existence The Weaver of Life is by far one of the most worshipped gods in Petria. Clerics and Apostles of The Life Giver often wear simple white or gold cloth robes with an extravagant red feathered mantle to signify their connection to the Solwardens, an religous order with chapters far and wide.
Rather than being seen as a force that produces and guides life directly, Sol is seen as a subtle force that encourages his followers to find their own way. With nudges and hints throughout a person's life, Sol influences his apostles by encouraging them to embrace the inherent chaos of mortal life and the potential of new beginnings. The average worshipper typically utters a prayer at the very beginning of the day or at the start of some new opportunity to seek favor from the Giving Bird.
"Sol guide our decisions that we may continue in your realm of life and reveal to us the fortune and favor of a new day"
- Common prayer to Sol

Description

As the titles Giving Bird and Red Storm suggest, Sol most often takes the form of his avatar, Aivus when appearing to his followers. This avatar appears as a red and gold-feather angelic hummingbird with an ornate tail plum. This form can range in size from an average-sized bird appearing to inspire followers in a vision to an imposing creature to warn those who disturb the balance of life; in either case, the form is always that of a hummingbird, a creature that Sol has a close affinity with and is considered a sign of good fortune among his followers.
Inversely, his true body is significantly more imposing and can easily incite fear in those who gaze upon it unprepared. The name Red Storm is derived from the malestrom-like nature of Sol's true body, which appears as a massive couatl-like creature with long tendrils of blue, red, and gold feathers. He towers from the surface of the Potami River to the skies above; his body and wings also feature dozens of large eye-like apertures that aid in his abilities of divination. Floating like crowns above his wings and head are the divinely connected wards of Arcadia, the body of Sol acting as a literal anchor for the nirvana of his followers.
It is strange to some that a god of such internal peace would have a form that exudes such grandeur and menace; perhaps when he was created, Sol too felt as if his form poorly reflected his personality but has since adapted to using his avatar as the main form of communication. Most of Sol's followers are unaware of his true body appearance, and to see it for the first time following their deaths is considered by many to be a test of their composure upon finally meeting their god.

Personality

Sol is a peace-loving and laid-back deity, embodying the virtues of patience and respect for all living beings. He oversees the cycle of life and birth with a gentle touch, allowing creatures to flourish or falter according to their own merits. Sol interacts with mortals with a sense of warmth and compassion, guiding them through the journey of life with gentle nudges and subtle guidance. He is revered as a benevolent protector and nurturer, worshipped by those who seek fertility, abundance, and the blessing of new beginnings.
Similar to his brother Aiffus, Sol prefers to interact with mortals indirectly, for the most part. With the exception of some chosen apostles, Sol mostly communicates with mortals through feelings; followers of the god who believe to have communed with him detail being washed over in guiding sensations of warmth or warning regarding their desires or questions. Rather than show a follower a vision of what is to come, Sol will guide an experienced follower to come to the aid of mortals who seek him out. Sol has been noted as enigmatic or reserved in comparison to other heavily worshipped gods; perhaps it is this subtle influence that captures the attention of his worshippers so profoundly.
When interacting with other gods, however, it could be said that Sol characterizes a certain shyness, even being indifferent to the concerns of other deities, with the exception, of course, being his twin sibling. Despite his immediate proximity to several other deities on the Potami or nearby within the Valderian Grovelands there are little to no historically noteable interactions between Sol and other gods. When approached by gods with whom he must conduct some business, he will often send clerics or devoted celestials to act as his proxy. Priests of Sol have arrived at the theory that after the end of the The Five Century War Sol's trust in other gods had simply shattered; after all, no one was more affected by the war's initial declaration than Sol himself due to Chernobogs treacherous impersonation of his brother.

Relationships

For a time in the Pre Creation Era Sol was romantically involved with Lysistra the god of freedom and rebellions, their relationship was fed by shared respect for the independance of all living creatures. During this time they would conceive Gormath the god of justice who would unfortunately be slain and split in two by Cloak during the Five Century War, becoming the opposing gods Gorm and Gorg. This tragedy would sever the romantic relationship between the two major gods.
Aiffus and Sol share a divine purpose and a profound friendship, literally born of the same essence these two twins are steadfast siblings that are often worshipped in tandem.
Sol views Hertha as both a guide and a peer, before the Five Century War the two would often coolaborate on the new creatures that would populate the realms, their first creation together most famously being the hummingbird. Since then the two operate seperate but still fond of eachother, their followers often joining in ceremonies or missions of further champion the Perfect Harmony.

History

When Chernobog set in motion her terrible plot to upset the cycle of life and death, the closeness of the twin gods was threatened. Taking the form of Aiffus while he was weakened and in hiding, the Voidqueen fooled Sol into redirecting mortal soul's into her domain, which she used to create the Void and the dark energy that would birth Cloak, Shrike, and the first Demons. His abilities for divination eventually allowed him to see the true Aiffus in hiding and the two drove away Chernobog in a mighty clash, the first true conflict of the war. The two gods have never forgiven her for this transgression.
In 392 PC during Cataclysms March one of Sols most loyal priests, Sonya Louxberg, took up arms against of Lotans Forces and with his blessing laid siege to the invading armies, the battle priests who drove out the extremists would go on to form the first iteration of the Solwardens and Sol would bestow the title of Prime onto Sonya for the remainder of her life.
In 965 PC, extremist worshippers of the twin gods enacted The Bermach Square Massacre, wherein they suddenly attacked a public square in front of the Chapel of Circuition, killing dozens of people they deemed to be false worshippers. With this event commenced a campaign of terror from the bastardized cult known as the Guardians of Divine Harmony, For several weeks, they produced propoganda and enacted violence on those they deemed unworthy of the gods favor. Ironically, it was the true Solwardens that stamped out this false church, once again taking up arms with the aid of the twin gods, who subsequently stripped the Guardians of all their clerical magic.

Abilities

As part of his portfolio, Sol has power over life and birth; if beseeched, he can bestow vitality upon mortals in dire moments or ensure the healthy birth of a newborn. Omnipresent as he is, he tends not to meddle in the affairs of mortals, partly out of respect for the natural progression of life to death but also partly out of concern for the consequences of constant interference from the gods. He has the power, like most gods, to ensure a certain child is born with a Tether, these naturally gifted children are regarded as future clerics or stewards of Sols faith.
Sol is a gifted and powerful diviner as well, with the power to set his gaze upon numerous places in the Cosmology at once. Each of the eyes on his true body acts as a Crystal Ball allowing him to scry almost anywhere, keeping tabs on both his followers and potential enemies. Wizards of divination may sometimes beseech him for good favor in their pursuits to see into the future, and if he sees their cause as just, he may even intervene to assist them in avoiding some great disaster. Though for the most part he keeps the future to himself, and for good reason, after all, there are few cases where a mortal cannot abuse the gift of foresight.
In combat, Sol is a genuine Red Storm of whirling blade-like feathers that shred his foes with ferocious precision. In combat, he is surrounded at all times by a 9th-level Level Blade Barrier which he is immune to. Aiffus uses his powerful divine magic to bolster his brother, adding both Radiant and Necrotic damage to his strikes. Sol has only ever been recorded doing battle during the Five Century War, it should surprise no one that, being a god of life, Sol is a devoted pacifist.

Worshippers

At their inception, the Solwardens were battle priests who took up arms against the invading zealots of Lotan during the Cataclysms March, a vicous war that ravaged northern Petria. After this campaign ended, the worshippers of the twin gods set to work aiding the victims of the conflict, which included humanitarian aid and burial rites for those who were killed. After this, the church laid down their weapons and became fully committed to the veneration of their gods and spreading their faith through philanthropic pursuits and the practice of intricate birth and burial rites such as Teneo and Solvo.
Novices in the faith are known as Keepers and must remain in the faith for 7 years and master the basic rites and practices of the Solwardens before they may rise through the order as Wardens, who are considered to be paragons of the joys of life and emmissaries for the natural release of death. Lastly, within the normal ranks of the church are the Curators who act as leaders for the organization and the area. The process of becoming a Curator is a long and arduous pilgrimage called the Vian Ascension that focuses entirely on the learning of surrounding cultures and the ability to connect with and heal the people around you.
A common phrase among the faith is "Be the Path" this phrase is meant to act as a catchall idiom to reflect life's twists and turns and eventual end, much like a paved road or a path of desire; we must all walk it in one way or another.
"There is a concept called a 'Desire Path' where paths are formed simply because enough people tread there, the earth flattens and hardens to accomadate the desires of those of who walk it. My role in the church is to be the manifestation of those paths, to flatten and accomodate so others may walk with comfort and ease, to aid in the chaos of life and prepare for the peaceful end we all are walking towards. In short, the role of the Curator, is to be the path."
-Curator of the Chapel of Circuition Circa 1021 PC

Divine Symbols & Sigils

There is some debate among scholars on what is the most historically prominent symbol of Sol. Throughout the different eras, interpretations of the Life Gods symbol have ranged from a simple hummingbird, an extravagant sun, an artistic portayal of the river Potami, or all manner of human-like silhouttes. Currently in vogue for the gods followers are two folded hands cradling a light or blossoming seed of some kind to symbolize birth or new life, usually carved in clay or some other paintable substance.

Tenets of Faith

Followers of Sol hold all life as sacred and worthy of reverence, believing that every living being is interconnected and deserving of respect and compassion.
