Jèredethi (ʤɛrɛdɛθi)

The Jèredethi are the denizens of the island nation of Jèrynn. The word Jèredeth literarlly means, "of/from Jèrynn," and the affix -i is used to mark the adjectival form of the demonym. Jèredeth is singular; Jèredethi is plural/collective. Jèredethi also refers to the Qh'Raa language of the island cognate with yet distinct from other northern Gruthen languages of that family.   Thus, for example, Oroyonn Jèredeth "means Oroyonn from the island-nation of Jèrynn." His surname is merely a toponym, used when traveling to other nations (like his chosen home, Port Hren, Hœm). His native tongue is Jèredethi, the language of the island. And his people are called Jèredethi. As Jèredethi usually refers to the humans of the island, Oryonn as a minotaur is called Jèredethi Minotaur (which may seem tautological in that minotaurs are believed to have originated on the island during the archaic Krété period, thus making all minotaurs of PÈRYL Jèredethi).   The most (in)famous son of the island is known as THE Jèredeth, and although well travelled and having been to his ancestral island, he was born to a Jèredethi exile in Port Hren. He had not been to the homeland of his human lineage before he was well into adulthood. His nom de guerre came from his rejection of his father and respect for his mother's people and her fondest wish to return to her homeland.

Naming Traditions

Family names

The Jèredethi do not take surnames per se, but toponyms are commonly used when individuals travel to different regions. When a Jèredethi leaves Jèrynn, they often take Jèredeth as their toponym and it functions like a surname (see below).

Other names

It is very common for the people of Jèrynn, should they travel abroad, to use Jèredeth or Jèredethi or similar variants as a sort of surname, but more to assert pride in their ancient lineage and homeland.   Cf. Oroyonn Jèredeth, the Jèredeth or his mother Zhezhoi Jèredeth.
