The Wilds

A Wild Place

Outside the established cities on Eterra, of which there are only a few, there are vast unexplored biosystems. But one area in particular is deviously hard to develop; the Wilds. Here, Eterran trees have grown densely packed, and if cutting through iron trees wasn't hard enough on potential settlers, the area is also packed with dangerous animals, including the highly intelligent gumpa.

A Deadly Place

To the inexperienced, almost everything that walks, crawls, or is rooted to the ground seems to be capable of killing humans. But to outlanders these dangers are just another part of making a living. Highly trained hunters act as escorts for development scouters and researchers, but even still, it isn't uncommon for one person to die every week.

A Wealth Untouched

Besides the extremely diverse biosystem initial scans of the area show there may be a large deposit of useful materials, like gold for use in electronics. Unfortunately, the cost of trying to clear the area for potential mining is still deemed too high; both economically and in the lives likely to be lost. That hasn't stopped some companies from investigating the Wilds or investing in automated equipment.

(heavy breathing)   "Damn it's hot. What do you think, Tony? Safe to eat?"   "I wouldn't risk it if we don't have to. We need water though, and there is only one 'clean' creek. Still should boil it to be sure."   "I think it's already boiled. What's the temp?"   "39 degrees."

"Understandably the capitalist brutes of MineMor are seeking the potential wealth under the Wilds. My only question is 'why is anyone risking their lives to help these elitist pricks?'" -the Rogue

A (Slightly) Acidic Rainforest

The Wilds occupy a tropical zone of Eterra leading to heavy rainfalls, especially during the monsoon season. These months make exploration into the wilds even more dangerous as much of the flora secretes an acidic wax that creates a semblence of acid rain beneath the canopy. The water that flows can get caught in leaves and has a slight acidic flavor, but because of the many poisonous plants present, it can be dangerous to drink. The water gets even more dangerous as water collected in leaves evaporates, creating a concentrate of acid that burns through the plant and falls onto the canopy floor. In areas of large collection, entire pools form that are almost certain death for any who might fall in.

I have an answer for the Rogue: money.   Really cool - I particularly like the idea of everything in the rainforest being slightly acidic. And the formation of deadly acid pools.   The audio log was a fun interlude as well. :)
