Dragonstar

Dragonstar is a genetically spliced fruit that is exclusively grown on Journey-2. It is fundemental for the Journic economy and is used in many exports.

Brand New Species

The dragonstar fruit is not a native species to Journey-2, nor is it natural. The plant is the result of splicing starfruit and dragonfruit DNA and has been one of the very few plant splices that can naturally reproduce. The fruit does require high nutrient soils to grow healthy and has greatly affected the economy and agriculture of Journey-2.

Brand New Liquor

With the prohibition recently adopted by the Perillel Republic by the time of Journey-2 establishing an atmosphere, alcohol demand and its price was skyrocketing. The early Journic settlers had established an independent mindset and many saw the demand for alcohol as an opportunity. Thus Dragonstar Moonshine was born.

Shooting Stars

The splicing of dragonfruit and starfruit is strange enough, combining a tree and a cactus, but the resulting plant couldn't be further from either of its parent species. The dragonstar kept the traditional tree base, a skinny, smooth-barked trunk growing around 4 meters with few and sporadic branches. Instead of leaves however, the branches grow long, flat cactus-like stems with areoles, where the dragonstar fruit grows from.

Shining Star

The fruit itself typically grows between 17 and 23 centimeters long, but the record is 42 centimeters. The dragonstar has retained the star-like shape from the starfruit but is now significantly rounder, growing to an average diameter of 12 centimeters. It's taste is difficult to describe but is often related to the combination of kiwi, pear, and apple.

Flaming Dragon

One of the more strange traits dragonstar fruit developed is the growth of large spines with a toxic coating. The toxin isn't particularly dangerous but is said to be extremely painful, and even a single prick can result in significant swelling. Due to the Journic's view on technology, this trait has made harvesting significantly slower.

Harvest

The dragonstar tree takes around four years to fully grow, after which it will take another six months to grow its first fruit. The tree will then produce between 60 to 90 fruit each year. Since all trees are harvested by hand, this process is quite time consuming and has become a major source of work for the Journic. A tree will live for around 60 years if left be, but farmed trees will be cut down once they stop bearing fruit.
