Grayhill Settlement in Pascelus | World Anvil

Grayhill

Grayhill (often called Grayhill-by-the-sea) is a port town down the Bent River from Stonebridge. As the only active port in the immediate region, it's a comparatively large and bustling town, though it faces many of the same dangers as other settlements do (wild creatures and raiders from land and sea alike).   The town gets its name from the large icy hill in the eastern side of the city - its surface is unnaturally cold, so even during summer there's a thin coat of snow or ice over the cobblestones, giving it a shiny gray look.   Grayhill residents make a living mostly in trade; caravans move salted fish and various flotsam and jetsam to Hillfort and Blackmire , as well as running river boats to and from Stonebridge .   Most of the vessels that moor at Grayhill are relatively small and rarely stray too far from the main port. A few of the more daring trace the coast as far as the mouth of the Steel River, but many of those that wander often go missing permanently.

A handful of larger ships make periodic trips into deeper waters and return with larger prey (giant squid, whales, and the like) though the men who captain and crew these vessels are widely regarded as being only passingly acquainted with sanity.

Districts

The eastern side of town is centered around trade, especially involving the river or sea trade. The western side of the river is given over to other pursuits, and there's some friction between the cultures on the two sides.
