Mayiy

Appearance
Mayiy are aquatic, primarily native to the planet Mayiy - Magellan 7. Most have webbed fingers and toes, and many have gills running down their necks and sides. Most resemble fish, though others more closely match other marine life. Over the generations, mating among Mayiy has resulted in some wild combinations.
  Physicality
Bioengineering results in many disparate variations even within splices of Terran, and nowhere is this more evident than with the Mayiy. Most Mayiy can breathe air as well as water, and many even breathe nitrogen or carbon dioxide instead of and in addition to oxygen.
Some features remain consistent among Mayiy. They swim on average three times as quickly as core Terrans. And despite jokes that they have mermaid tails or lay eggs, they reproduce as Terrans do. Even water-breathing Mayiy can travel above ground or through space by utilizing a thin water-filled breathing suit that extracts nitrogen from the surroundings. Some Mayiy even possess bioluminescence, others an ability to squirt ink. Some have cartilage in lieu of bones.
  Culture
Mayiy were originally engineered for the oceanic planet of Mayiy to help Terrans access its countless undersea resources. Mayiy work in miles-tall “surfscrapers” whose foundations are sunk into the ocean floor. Mayiy have become adept at waterproof design, and most of their electronics are holographic, heat-sensitive, and waterproof. Surfscrapers generally have hundreds of floors, the upper ones walkable, the lower ones flooded and accessible via airlock.
Undersea acoustics have made Mayiy music a cult phenomenon above ground. Underwater arenas and special listening devices have become trendy venues on Mayiy and Agralis, even for air-breathing Terrans, and Mayiy musicians are often booked for any system with water. Most Mayiy tech is built to resemble sea life, in honor of the many endemic species exterminated during early Terran terraforming and colonization efforts.
  Systems & Corps
Mayiy work with many corps in several systems, although they enjoy a level of autonomy beneath the waves on various planets that most cultures do not. Few executives wish to undergo the Mayiy splice, so Mayiy are often left to their own devices. Terran Systems and other corps recognize a mild loss of efficiency in these colonies due to lack of oversight.
