Yrmudoi Myth in Pallo | World Anvil

Yrmudoi (ERM-ū-dȯi)

In one, fell swoop he devoured an entire forest. All that remained was a gaping hole, a wound in the countryside. As he approached and opened his horrific mouth wide, millions of screams could be heard billowing out from his stomach. As he left, those screams were quieted, though thousands more voices were added.
-Dracolian Fable, attributed to Delila

Summary

Yrmudoi travels the planes, seeking souls who are not ascending to Mokusdin. Where he finds multitudes of souls, he opens his horrifying maw and unleashes his breath. He has no voice of his own, but each time he opens his mouth, the screams of those in him can be heard.   He travels the plains, devouring souls and, very rarely, invading a world to eat whatever he can to satiate himself. When he's full, he returns to Mokusdin where he can finish digesting them, regain his strength, and let Mokusdin return those souls to a world to live again.

Historical Basis

There are stories of Yrmudoi invading Dracolia to eat. They say it happened millennia ago, so it cannot be fully verified. A verified sighting has not been recorded on Pallo since, though some think he took part in  The Celestial Intervention.   The Coven of Ages claim to have regained the memories of their past lives, and those who have visited who are not new souls, claim some successes, too. Through them there is some verification, though disputed. Some who claim to remember their time being reincarnated say that it was an unspeakably painful process where there is no solace due to the seemingly endless screams of agony.

Spread

Ubiquitous on Dracolia. Across Pallo there are stories of Yrmudoi that have been passed down, though in many places his name is somewhat different, and in many he isn't believed to be a god but a nightmare or planar horror.

Variations & Mutation

In Amana, his name has been mistranslated to Wurmudo. There it is believed that he acts as a unique hell for those who have committed a great sin.

Cultural Reception

Yrmudoi is a difficult figure to fully grasp when it comes to the people's perception of him. He is the basis for their reincarnation, and does so through cleansing, but it is painful, and a slow process. He is used to scare younger children into behaving.

In Art

Aboriginal Dracolians sang songs of Yrmudoi. Some spears are crafted with many teeth lining the shaft to represent his horrible maw, and where the victim is intended to go. Ritual daggers made from bone are used or passed down representing him.   After the Great Migration, as colonists and Dracolians integrated and assimilated, artists began trying to interpret the stories into paintings. Because of his horrid vissage, they are infrequently sought after.
