Starscales

Aquatic scales with magic enhancing qualities. They are found on the Slumbering Isles. Where normally one would find dirt, rocks, or grass, on the Isles is found scales, a sinewy/fiberous material, and moss.

Properties

Material Characteristics

It is a hard scale, feeling almost like rock. Due to the Megalofidiladi that covers the area, it will seem somewhat glossy when freshly harvested. When dried, it has a matte appearance, but the small white, yellow, and orange specks one the surface become visible.

Physical & Chemical Properties

It tends to be cool to the touch and many say it has magical, clairvoyant properties. It is believed that the white, yellow, and oranges specks on the scales are the bioluminescent cells that magically altered the Imbued here, giving them their distinctive look.

Geology & Geography

The Slumbering Isles  is the only place these can be found. They are on the surface up to around 10 feet deep.

The hide of the Megalofidi.

Life & Expiration

After being harvested, they remain quite strong. Once dry, they become brittle in around 5 years. If they are treated with Megalofidiladi once every other week they can last up to 10 years before becoming brittle. If preserved properly it can survive for centuries.

History & Usage

History

The megalofidi was said to glow brilliantly in the waves. At night, it made the ocean glow blue, yellow, and orange - a terrifying moving light beneath the waves that would break through and wreak havoc. When settling on The Slumbering Isles, they noticed the scales didn't have the same brilliant glow.

Discovery

Since it covers the entirety of The Slumbering Isles, it was quickly discovered. After much experimentation and cultural development, it became widely used for a few purposes.

Everyday use

Its most common use is in jewelry and ornamentation. It can also be found adorning foci to help boost divination properties.

Cultural Significance and Usage

For the Languidians and Brightlings, it has become a major cultural symbol. Diviners use it in recipes to assist with oracle rituals. It has also been used as an ingredient in a psychotropic drug for spiritual or social use.
