Onyx Settlement in Pallo | World Anvil

Onyx

Leader: Doriel ben Lanir
Rank: Shif

Shif is the Samaritan title for a local leader. They are given some power in order to manage daily needs of a village, town, or city.

The Foreign House of Espirian Diplomacy used to be in Onyx, but when the Abyss infected the nearby forest, it was moved to Emerald. The large military presence is still garrisoned there. Onyx has a proud history of providing soldiers to the Samaritan army and is home to the military academy where new recruits are trained.

Even though it is a heavily militarized city, it maintains the tradition of Samaritan cities no being walled. Buildings along the perimeter are more fortified, there is an elaborate tunnel system throughout the city between the surface and the sewer system. Samaritan wizards have been working on creating a network of teleportation points around the city to assist in movements as well.

Even with an emphasis on the military, Onyx has a thriving community of guilded and independent merchants. There is a permanent outdoor market in the center of the city with many smaller collections of merchants in various areas. There are also a cathedral, a church, 2 monestaries, 2 mosques, and 15 temples in the city. Each is a home of worship to a unique god. The largest religious group in Onyx, and whom worship in the cathedral, are the Acolytes of Alon. There is some dogmatic division within the church. Most believe Alon to be the creator of the plane from which the first followers on Pallo are said to come from (Ascencia) and his influence can be felt on Pallo through faith, a small sect believe him to be the creator of Pallo, and an even smaller, radical, sect believe him to be the creator of all planes. This dogmatic division is primarily debated and does not cause larger conflicts.

History

11 OA
The first signs of the Abyss in the forest are spotted on 18 Dutor, 11 OA. It was spotted by lumberjacks heading into the forest. Unfortunately, it was caught too late to prevent permanent scarring. On 10 Fen, 22 OA, the Black Lords defeated the creature causing the spread with the help of a band of clerics, druids, and wizards. The band formed the Abyss Watchers. They continue to watch over the infected forest and try to heal the afflicted land.
