Personal history

Born to an alcoholic couple via a surrogate, Horrace's life began in turmoil. His father's were once respected teachers in the community, but years of abuse and harassment took a toll on them. They began abusing alcohol to cope, and it got out of control by the time Horrace was born. They didn't realize they needed help, and hid the abuse well.   The surrogate mother, Mary Harlow,, was a kind, younger woman. Once Horrace was born, she became quite invested in his life, offering to babysit for the couple often. For several years she did not see the abuse. When she finally questioned why he had some bruises that were unusual, the couple showed their hidden anger.   Horrace loved his surrogate mother, and would run to her any time she came to see him. She thought this was just joy in seeing her and didn't realize he was scared of his fathers. When they forbade her from seeing him again, it crushed both of them. Horrace began trying to find ways to escape.   Not interested in school, he frequently skipped classes trying to wander around the city. He found wandering to be more comforting than studying. Unfortunately, wandering also got him into scuffles with random ruffians. Unsurprisingly, Horrace had developed anger issues and would frequently escalate things into fights.   In his early teenage years he began training with golem hunters. He figured if his fathers wouldn't let him leave, he'd at least do something productive that let's him get away for a little while.   Just after his 16th birthday, the Tympa was attacked by thousands of warforged. Horrace fought to fend them off. Tympa was not prepared for war, and the devastation was thorough. Thankfully, he and his fathers survived.   The whole ordeal was a wakeup call for his fathers. They both took a hard look at their lives and saw the damage being done. The three of them had a long heart to heart to mend their relationships.   They helped rebuild tympa for a year. The black flag of mourning was waved non-stop. Many families were torn apart by the attack. Horrace hoped he would find his mother every day, but never did. He worried about her as he worked throughout the city.   Three years later, he decided to peruse the cemetery. He was saddened to recognize so many names as he walked. Then, one small stone, etched only with a name, made him freeze. The stone read "Mary Harlow 39 OA - 0 OA."   He slowly knelt down, resting his hands on the stone. Tears fell as his breathing became erratic. He grieved for an hour before getting up to leave. As he did, he grabbed a black flag and draped it over himself like a shawl. When he returned home, his fathers gave him a huge, warm, consoling hug. The three of the cried and grieved together. They held a small ceremony for her that night, thanking her and apologizing to her.   The next day, Horrace said he wanted to leave and explore. He figured it would let him heal and grow as a person. It would give his fathers time to heal and grow as well. The three agreed and began collecting what they could to send him off. On Blessings 5 they partied and had a grand farewell. The three of them cried as Horrace left.   Horrace traveled for several years working many different jobs and going on adventures. But, on Blessings 16 he got his lucky break. While celebrating in Emerald, he met Baron von Hafn and joined his crew.   His talents complimented the crew nicely. Though his temper had been improved after a lot of healing and experience, he enjoyed being able to unleash his energy while hunting bounties, treasure hunting, and doing some occasional piracy.   The traditional black flag he carried, and the tribute he would pay to those he killed, earned him his nickname - his return meant death, and he would wave the black flag to honor the fallen.
