Traveler's Aegis

What can I say? Sometimes there are benefits to drinking random liquid you find by the road.
— Jane Kathadin
While odd, Traveler's Aegis is an immensely valuable liquid for those in need of a little extra help while on the road. At least, so long as one is not a germophobe, or averse to having dirt in one's drink.

Properties

Material Characteristics

Traveler's Aegis is a clear liquid that pools in strange places by roadways. It appears mostly at random. The easiest way to identify it is by the smell, which is a rather pleasant chicken scent.

History & Usage

History

After its discovery, Traveler's Aegis was promptly adopted as a common drink among Clan Floodstride, already noted for their nomadic lifestyle. They found this liquid beneficial and claimed it as part of their cultural heritage. This is respected by the other clans, and by outsiders who don't really feel comfortable drinking a liquid straight off the ground.   This is not to say that myriad scientists and wizards have not tried to develop it further and adapt it, but usually their efforts fall short of the effects provided by the natural material.

Discovery

As noted by the initial quote, Traveler's Aegis was discovered at random, by a woman named Jane Kathedin. By all rights, she should have died, and apparently wasn't even thirsty enough to need to drink, she was just curious. She was on her way to marry a member of Clan Floodstride, and they promptly adopted the liquid as a useful tool.

Everyday use

The most common uses are as a drink, where it serves as a digestive aid. This can be particularly useful in foreign cultures with hard to digest foodstuffs or heavy spices. When splashed over oneself, it serves as a temporary weak barrier that serves as a defense against weaponry and, in a few rare cases, germs.

Distribution

Storage

The Aegis can be stored for about a week before it degrades and turns into a kind of thick gray sludge.

Law & Regulation

Some countries do have laws against drinking it or bathing in it because it's seen as unsanitary, and most people are happy to oblige this since there are other safer ways to protect oneself. Some people still use it anyway.

Very fun idea with some unique humor sprinkled into the article. I am wondering the strength of the "temporary, weak barrier" against weaponry. A comparison would be useful there. Is it equivalent to a thick coat, leather armor, chainmail?   Radioactive as a taste descriptor is a bit weird to me also, but that may be my time in the nuclear industry coming out.   Overall I enjoyed the read

One last thought with Aegis in the name I was maybe expecting a bit more on its defensive properties or how it got the name

Glad you enjoyed it! If this wasn't a World Ember piece I would definitely expand more on the defensive and the name. It does need a bit more detail there!
