Deaf Condition in Outspoken | World Anvil

Deaf

Deafness is a condition that involves full or partial hearing loss in both ears. It can be acquired through physical harm, such as blunt force trauma or a sound loud enough to permanently damage the ears, or passed down genetically. Perhaps the most well known case of congenital deafness in the world of OUTSPOKEN is found in the family line of Queen Armóin Slánaitheoir, where it is known to skip a generation.

For commoners, Deafness can be immensely difficult, as access to education is highly limited. In these classes, Deaf folx often develop a form of house sign in order to communicate with members of their family and close friends. In the upper classes, Deafness was once seen as a disgrace, but this was changed by King Tráthúil Slánaitheoir IV and his Deaf wife, Queen Armóin. It was through them that The Language of Hands was created, and is now often taught as part of any young Noble's formative education.

There is no known cure for Deafness.
