RIMs Vehicle in Ostyria | World Anvil

RIMs

Traversing Lanfe is an arduous endeavor for anyone or anything that lives there, it is rarely done by most humanoids and even the fiends that are native to the landscape would rather not travel across it...at least not on foot.

Roving Infernal Machines or RIMs for short are used for long-distance travel across Lanfe and come in a wide variety of sizes and styles. From single-user RIMcycles to colossal-size RIMs that carry fortresses and villages on their chassis/keels, RIMs are the preferred method of travel for the denizens of Lanfe.

Demons roll around on RIMcycles in groups terrorizing anyone they can find while devils transport platoons of soldiers via RIMs to neighboring encampments to subdue rising tensions or to war with other devils and fiends. The few humanoids who are not enslaved create communities on the top of RIMs and constantly move across Lanfe to avoid danger. They even group together in large caravans to form greater communities or conduct trade.

RIMs are made from many infernal materials, natural metals, and crafted alloys. The first RIMs were created by fiends and the origin of how humanoids obtained them is unclear but many believe that a powerful purger raided a RIM factory and distributed the RIMs and parts inside to any humanoid they could find.

Power Generation

When the fiends first invented RIMs the main source of power was the souls of the damned. However, humanoids are not able to easily harvest the souls of the damned and therefore they converted the power source to another resource that was just as plentiful. Current RIMs run on Demon Blood and lots of it, depending on the size of the RIM.

Propulsion

The engines that power RIMs are a mystery to most who use them and RIM Engineers are in high demand. The high-level concept behind a RIM engine is that it charges the Demon Blood and excites the arcane energy within causing it to combust which creates thrust thus propelling the RIM in the direction opposite of the engine exhaust.

Weapons & Armament

Smaller RIMs are easily accessorized with chains, spikes, and blades whereas larger RIMs can be outfitted to be used as siege weapons or house canons that fire spikes and chains.

Armor and defense

Being made of infernal metals provides a natural armor for most RIMs, therefore it is mostly the drivers, passengers, and riders of the RIMs that are in need of protection. Smaller RIMs can be outfitted with shields or enclosures whereas larger RIMs may have shelters on board.

Hangars & docked vessels

Certain larger RIMs are designed with the express intention to house multiple smaller RIMs within them, these types of RIMs are mostly used by armies of devils or purger companies.

When it comes to caravans, many settlement-grade RIMs and merchant RIMs are equipped with chaining hooks. Chaining hooks are used to connect one RIM to another allowing the lead RIM to do most of the work in moving the caravan of RIMs forward. These chains are one-way people from one RIM get to another however these hooks take time to connect and can be dangerous to traverse given the size of the RIM.
