Leylines

Ley lines are conduits of magical energy that traverse all known corners of creation, serving the same function as the veins and arteries of living creatures. These conduits, connecting geographical and cosmological features both great and small, grant knowledge and power to those who tap into them. Expanding out from the Portals of Arcane Energy around the world, the energy coming from the lines has wained greatly since The War of Shattered Souls.

Manifestation

Invisible to the naked eye, ley lines, weave around the globe creating pockets of intense arcane energy where they cross over one another known as Arcane Nexus points or just nexus. These nodes have become highly sought after since they are able to fuel and advance arcane discovery much like the actual Portals. Ley lines do not exist physically and are not tangible, even if they alter the environment around them. They course deep beneath the earth, in the water, or in the air.
The lines are categorized as being either major or minor, with there being ten major lines that connect each of the portals to one another and countless minor lines that expand out from portals and circumvent the world.
It is possible to detect a ley line via standard divination magics or magical items such as Weave Lenses. To the observing caster, the ley line appears as a luminous torrent of energy motes, mana, which pulses with vibrant light of all possible colors, creating a magnificent spectacle.

Localization

Interacting with ley lines can be dangerous but those who have found a way to tap into them safely find that the lines give a significant boost to their magic. As an action, or as part of casting a spell, a creature can attempt to seize the massive magical power from a ley line or nexus point for itself, if only for a moment. When it does so, the creature makes a Wisdom saving throw, with the DC's listed in the table below.
Interacting with the leylines can be dangerous but those who have found a way to tap into them safely find that the lines give a significant boost to their magic.
When one steps into either a line or a nexus they must first make a Wisdom saving throw, using the DC in the table below, the creature must repeat the save at the beginning of each turn if they choose to continue to interact with the ley line or nexus in which case the DC goes up by one each round. When a creature ends their interaction with the arcane energy they take a level of exhaustion equal to the corresponding line.
On a failed save the arcane energy begins to take over the user, compelling them to stay in the energy and become one with it. With a failure, a user will ignore everything else and will do everything within their power to stay in the line. They are able to repeat the save at the beginning of their next turn.
Type Tap DC Exhaustion Levels on Successful tap
Minor Ley Line 15 1
Major Ley Line 20 2

Each round that a user spends in the energy after a failed save allows more of it to move through the user taking over their body and they gain additional points of exhaustion on top of what they will already take.
  1. First fail: Arcane energy starts to enter the user and slowly starts to fill them up; if they are able to get out the user gains 1 point of exhaustion.
  2. The second fail: The user gains 2 points of exhaustion.
  3. The third fail: The user gains 3 points of exhaustion.
  4. The fourth fail: The user gains 4 points of exhaustion.
  5. The fifth fail: The user gains 5 points of exhaustion.
  6. The sixth fail: The user has now been completely taken over by the Arcane energy taking the 6th point of exhaustion leading to their death via a Manaburn, the outcomes of which are detailed below.
Manaburn. If a creature dies as a result of having six exhaustion levels after tapping into a ley line or a nexus, it explodes in an incredible force of raw magic, called manaburn. When a creature dies this way it will experience one of four outcomes found in the table below. In addition, all creatures and objects not worn or carried by a creature within a certain area around the manaburn must make a Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, they take force damage as detailed in the Manaburn table, or half as much on a successful one. Creatures and objects reduced to 0 hit points in this way are affected in the same way as the dying creature. All creatures that die from the burn can be brought back only by means of a true resurrection or wish spell.
D4 Outcome
1
The creature's body is disintegrated and absorbed into the ley line or
nexus.
2 The creature's body explodes sending out an additional 2d10 force damage.
3 The creature's body becomes a vessel for pure arcana for 1d4 rounds and can be tapped into and should be treated as an extension of the ley line or nexus point. After which the body falls dead.
4 The creature's body is teleported to an unknown location within 5 miles of the ley line or nexus point. Roll 1d4
