The Myth of The Shroud of Hollows

Summary

Long ago, in the early days of Chrysali civilization, there was a Chrysali who was mysterious in a great number of ways. He lurked outside of normal civilization, and rarely engaged with anyone around him. His mind always seemed to be somewhere else, and he spoke with a ghostly rasp. He rarely ate or drank, and never did he do so in front of others.    It is said that his strange demeanor could be explained, at least in part, by a shroud that he always wore. It was a tattered, grey shroud that was riddled with holes and cuts. It looked like it had seen many battles, though it was unlikely the holes were from weapons or magic. The shroud was said to grant its wearer unnatural abilities, such as the ability to pass through solid objects, see souls, and even pass between the realms of the living and the dead at will.    This mysterious shroud was coveted by many throughout the Chrysali kingdom, but none were able to lay their hands on it - literally! Every chance they had, it always seemed to pass right through their fingers. Not much is known about its current whereabouts, but neither it, nor its wearer, have been seen in millennia.

Historical Basis

The myth is rooted in events that did occur, though no evidence of its existence currently exists.

Spread

The myth is not widely known, even among Chrysali, with the few that do know if its myth being historical scholars and Necromancers. Some go mad in search of the mythological shroud.

Variations & Mutation

There are many variations of of the myth. Some claim the shroud could hide you from Death, some say the wearer was Death and the shroud was nothing more than what he was wearing. Others say the wearer gave it to the Sacred Beetle for safekeeping. It is unknown what the actual truth is.

Cultural Reception

The legend itself doesn't play a huge role in the societies or cultures of any race or kingdom, and is only truly significant to historical scholars or Necromancers. For historical scholars the story is most often nothing more than speculative history, with the true story being so muddied by time that the truth is thought to be forever lost. For Necromancers, it is a great magical artifact, regardless of the version of the tale they hear. Many Necromancers dedicate their lives to seeking out this mythological shroud, none succeed, and all go mad.

In Literature

Many scrolls are dedicated to The Shroud of Hollows, ranging from historical documents to research notes, and even historical fiction novels.

In Art

There are many paintings and tapestries dedicated to The Shroud of Hollows and its wearer. Some depict the wearer masked in shadow, while others depict the wearer passing through the barrier to the underworld. A few songs have even been written about its mysterious nature.
