Kulsa

The Dungeon Master's Familiar

"The sign of the fox at the beginning of any journey is an omen of strange, and heroic events. Many adventurers keep a talisman of the creature upon their person, or in their packs, for this was the form of the first Familiar of Orr. The first spirit summoned from the BEYOND to serve as a companion, and the living spellbook, for deeds that would save the world, or, at least that is the Legend that has been passed down since the first age. What truth lies in such superstitions is outside my realm of knowledge, or critique... but the fox is a sly, and cunning creature painted in bold colors. An animal that is swift, and daring in it's own right. A perfect sigil for those who tramp across the world, facing dangers few others could imagine."
— Rennian Kaldwell, Historian

The First Familiar

Legends of Kulsa have existed since the dawn of the first era, and there are even petroglyphs in Nausica's Skybeyond Mountains, scribed by ancient Cloud Giants, depicting a wandering 'fox-like' trader who arrived with artifacts, and instruments of magic undreamed of. Adventurer's throughout the ages have often spoken of curious encounters with such a being who could open doorways into a magical shop larger than even the palaces of the Seven Sultans of Infidia. It is said that upon his back this wandering trader possesses an item of legend described as "The Dungeon Master's Handbag" and that from it, the fox could draw nearly anything imaginable. While extra-dimensional spaces are not so uncommon as to be undreamed of, the bag which this being bares is said to be able to pluck any object from any place, from any time, and from any dimension. Such items, once acquired, have a habit of dissapearing once they have served their 'purpose.' And likewise, the fox-merchant is said only to appear in the most dire of moments, offering wares which have turned the tide of fate, and saved lives otherwise doomed to oblivion.
This immense magical artifact, in conjunction with Kulsa's mythology in history, and their appearances in both the Dungeon Dimension, and moments of world-shaping events have lead to the belief that this entity is in fact either a Minor Endless (whose domains some suspect to be 'adventure'), or... that they are in fact the first Familiar, spoken of in legend, as having once been bound to Rizion herself. These theories are only strengthened by the fact that many beings within the Dungeon Dimension appear to 'serve' Kulsa, either as extension of their impressive library of grand artifacts, or by literally 'placing' treasures within difficult to reach locations.
Those who have encountered Kulsa depict the character as incredibly conniving, curious, thieving, mischevious... but ultimately, concerned about the fate of the world. He has been known to let adventurers rifle through his bags at times without charge or penalty, and at others to offer the masterpieces of his endless storehouse at ludicrous prices. The Brothers Mageworks in Tantallion is the only known shop in the Prime Material plane that claims to have brokered a deal with Kulsa, although the brothers themselves (Reuben, and Samille) have never revealed the nature of such a contract. Most suspect this to be an outlandish lie, and that the brothers receive their wares due to their close affinity with the Pathfinder Guild whom they supported during the events of the founding members great adventures, but none can dispute it is one of the most extravagant magical item shops on the continent since those events occurred.   Beyond these theories, and supposed connections...   Little else is known of Kulsa except that he has appeared in folklore since the Catacylsm and that rumors abound that he was last seen in Iskandar.
