Coins & Currency

History of Coins   The first minted coins were made in the kingdom of Drin at the end of the first era. The Dwarves, whom traditionally live in giant, multi-tiered mountain fortresses called Vahl's, have societies made of many distinct clans and castes that work together to perform unparalleled feats of engineering. However, in order to make each member of the separate clans feel as though their effort were rewarded, and that they were compensated correctly for the skill of their labor, a coinage system was developed. The coins at that time were only used and traded within the mountain holds of the Vahl, and coins from one Vahl held very little value in other Dwarven Vahl's despite the currency system quickly spreading from hold to hold.   King Drin, the Lord of Iron himself, was originally opposed to such currency, but in time saw the benefits of a common unit of measurement for the import, and export of goods and labor (for his sight was beginning to fan out across the wider world and consider what would need to be done to conquer, and hold it). Thus he created the first mint, and ensured that the coins made of it were measured and weighed to the gram. He created the first common currency system between the Dwarves of the Azure Mountains, and eventually the remainder of his vast realm.   The dwarven coins were eventually traded, and found their way southward beyond the meadow into the lands of Iskandar were the concept was considered by the early councils of the Iskar Astartes. Being a feudal government, the Iskar Astartes were less keen to adopt the system. They had, until that time, simply kept records of credit between their houses, and dukedoms. Supplies and labor were traded and given upon vow and bargain. The Iskar Astartes feared that a coinage system might allowed for peasants, and yeoman to (eventually) hold equal power to the Knighthood, or that by adopting it the Dwarves of the northern reaches could influence their houses (and they were not wrong in these speculations), but it did allow for more accounting between the Knighthood, and eventually Iskandar began to mint their own coins.   Dalair, the Freelands, and eventually Infiidia would develop their own mints, and their own coinage systems much later on, once both the Iskardian, and Drin coins had begun to reach continental circulation. Only the Isles of Aardwulf have withstained from this practice (although they have accumulated vast treasuries of other coins from other nations in their raids, and as compensation).   In the end, there have been many different mintings of coins, but what has made such currency 'universal' is simply the 'weight' of each coin. When Drin established the base weights that each coin should represent, he had in fact, created the continental stantard.

The Coins of Ka

Sometimes called 'Soul Coins' or 'Planar Coins', the Coins of Ka were created by a being known only as Mr. Pinner who dwells within the Plane of Hades. Mr. Pinner owns an infernal law firm called Wolfram & Hart comprised of devils, and would-be-devils operating within the black city of Abaddon. Very few beings have ever met Mr. Pinner, and those that have are often left with the curious impression that Mr. Pinner is not at all from this universe, but rather, arrived here during its formation and is biding their time... collecting contracts, souls, and other 'valuables' of the planes.   Regardless, the Coins of Ka are the only legitimate currency within the Outer Planes. There are a finite number of these coins in existence, and each of them can be individually tracked, and accounted for by Wolfram & Hart. The coins are known for their 'Red-Gold' color. They cannot be destroyed. They cannot be duplicated, and if unattended for too great a time (lost) they can be recalled to the banks of Abaddon.
