Character Creation

This article describes the process of creating a character for games of Dungeons & Dragons (5e) in the world of Orr. Some of these instructions may vary depending on the level at which the game or one-shot is determined to start. As a general rule, all officially published material is acceptable. Anything from a third-party source or from Unearthed Arcana must be discussed and agreed upon beforehand.   Ultimately the Dungeon Master is the final arbiter as to whether your character is appropriate for the game.

Ancestry & Background

The playable races for games set in the world of Orr include all races published in the following books:
  • The Players Handbook
  • Elemental Evil Player's Companion
  • Volo's Guide to Monsters
  • Ebberon: Rising From the Last War
  • Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft

  •   If you wish to play a race not listed in these books, whether it's another published adventure or UA material, contact your DM.   Character backgrounds can be as detailed as you prefer, but they should always include a section of 'bullet point' facts where various aspects of the background are summarized. Consider these bullet-points as the most important pieces of information regarding your character. They may include such information as: Your place of origin, surviving family members / friends / lovers / enemies / rivals, how you became an adventurer, magical artifacts / heirlooms or other important items, and your goals / motivations.   The purpose of a 'bullet-point' background is to provide the DM a quick reference sheet for your character's narrative.   Special Note: It is (generally) frowned upon for your character to begin play at lower levels with a background that establishes a prior, more powerful levels (for instance: Having once been a great mage who lost their magical ability)

    Core Statistics

Determining your core statistics is done using a static array system and a 'floating' racial point system. This array is different depending on the number of players in the game and the challenge level of the adventure. The DM should alert you which array to use or whether you may be using a different method (such as rolling):   3-4 Players: 8, 10, 12, 13, 15, 16   4-6 Players: 8, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15   6+: 8, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15   Assign these values as you see fit to each of your core statistics before applying racial bonuses. After they have been set you may choose to use the 'floating' bonus. The floating bonus allows you to assign -one- of your racial modifer bonuses to a stat not listed in the race description.   For example, if your racial bonus would give you a +2 CON, and a +1 WIS, you can move that point of WIS to another stat, or your can apply just a +1 CON, and the other point to a stat of your choice. You cannot choose a stat you are already receiving a racial bonus towards (In this example, for instance, you cannot break the +2 CON and apply it to WIS because you are already receiving a bonus).   This method cannot be used to make your core statistics higher than 20.
"After you have finished selecting your array, and applying your racial bonuses you may gain profeciency in a number of languages, tools, gaming sets, or vehicles equal to your INTELLIGENCE modifier (I.E. If you have a 14 in INT you can select two additional languages to learn, or any combination of languages, tools, gaming sets, or vehicles).

    Starting Gold & Equipment

Your starting gold and additional equipment are determined by the level that the game begins. Refer to the chart below:
    Level 1 50gp + 2d4 x 10 1 potion of healing
    Level 3 100gp + 2d4 x 10 1 common magical item
    Level 5 250gp + 2d4 x 10 1 uncommon magical item
    Level 10 500gp + 2d4 x 10 1 rare magical item
    Level 15 750gp + 2d4 x 10 1 very rare magical item

    Hit Points

Hit points are rolled per level up, but reroll 1's. Inspiration points can be spent to reroll Hit Points during level up.

    Feats

You may be given the option to choose additional, or bonus feats at the beginning of a game. These feats can be selected from all the published material for Dungeons & Dragons (5e), or you may be instructed to choose a feat from the list of Heroic Feats. These Heroic Feats are extremely powerful and notably unbalanced, thus subject to change or alteration at any time.   In addition to published feats you may select them from the following Unearthed Arcana articles:
