Hressan Republic

The Hressan were a subject race of the Tazzyn that gained their independance in the late 25th century.

Overview

The Hressan had been a second class race within Tazzyn space, relegated to menial roles but often allowed to serve in the Tazzyn military, civil service, scout services and other roles.

Physiology

To a Terran, the Hressan appear very similar, if not identical, to their larger Tazzyn cousins.  However, Hressans are a distinct species in their own right with a different physiology.   Hressans are feline descended humanoids, generally standing between four foot eight and five foot nine, with a slim or athletic build.  Hressan females tend to be slightly smaller than Hressan males   Hressan's are known for their hardiness and tough metabolism, with Hressan's being famed for their ability to "sleep off" disease and even serious injuries.

History

Little is known how the Hressans were first assimilated into the Tazzyn Empire.  The Hressan's were  Tazzyn subject race when the Terrans made first contact with the Tazzyn.   Generally speaking the Hressans were seen as a second class citizen, though perhaps the most favoured subject race.  Hressan's were free to travel throughout the Empire, take on roles in the Imperial Civil service and military and even occupy posistions at court, though few of them ever reached those heights.   There was, however, a huge amount of disdain and condescension from the Tazzyn and the Great Houses to the Hressan, which caused the Hressan to chafe under their overlordship.   In the 2360s, the Hressans began to agitate for their independence and the Emperor ordered a huge force sent to Hressan worlds to stop them from breaking away. This was not a popular move in the Tazzyn court. The Hressan bid for independence was recognized and supported, politically anyway, by the Tranoans and the The Terran Empire. However after a concentrated effort by the Tazzyn, the Hressans were forced to give up their bid.   Over generations, the Hressans agitated for their independence more and more, and in the late 25th century, they fought a war for their independence. Shockingly, thanks to a combination of a lack of political will and dogged resistance, the Hressans won a stunning victory over the Tazzyn and won their independence.

Culture

Hressans are known for their hard working, industrious and deeply deteremined culture.  The Hressans value persistance, innovation and courage.   Their home-world was a desert world for a long time and the Hressans have a "kinship" for the hardy and tough cacti of their home-world.  This is reflected in a lot of Hressan art and culture.   Hressans are very family orientated and tend to have big extended families, with gatherings taking place a couple of times per year.   The concept of "hospitality" is incredibly important to the Hressans, who hold that any guest, arriving during twilight hours, who asks for a meal and a safe place to rest, should be granted one unless there is "no food in the pantry and no fire in the hearth."   Hressan's hugely value education and all higher education is state provided, free of charge.  As a result, the Hressans are known to be one of the best educated races in the quadrant, with strong R&D and innovative designs.

Religion

The Hressan's have a pantheonistic religion which was surpressed under Tazzyn rule.  About half of all Hressan's worship one or more of the "pantheon Gods", often choosing one as a patron God and setting up a small shrine to them.  The Hressan's admit that there was, a long time ago, blood sacrifice to the Gods but now this is done symbolically, rather than actually.   A recently formed religion, of "Torma-Gesst" became popular during the time under the Tazzyn.  A montheistic religion that values strength, toughness and bravery, it is seen by some Hressans as being a key engine to their eventual independence.  Never the less, fundementalist Torman's, recognisable due to their dark red or orange hoods, are considered zealots by many Hressans.   There are also a lot of secularists within Hressan culture, ranging from agnostic, spiritualist, obscure pagan and atheist belief systems.

Government

The Hressan government is a Federal Republic and highly centralized, with most power with the state.   The highest rung of government is the Executive-State Council.  The Hressan call this the "Pashker" and it is made up of the Prime Minister, their cabinet and the Chief of Staff of the Hressan Military.   The legislative branch is a bi-cameral body, with a parliament (Tshema) and a chamber of Peers (Tashan).  The chamber of peers is made up of "lifetime appointments" and is generally made up of experts in various fields, as well as former senior members of the government.  Most power is exercised by the Tshema, which is elected under universal suffrage.   The judicial branch sees several regional courts and a single "Federal Court".  Federal law enforcement is a branch of the Hressan military, known as the Ketean.   The Hressan military is very strong and military service is compulsory to all Hressans who are physically capable.  Once this service has been done, Hressan's remain a reservist for the next 15 years.   The Hressan military is led by its own council, the secretive Ilshann, which was originally formed during the Hressan war of independnce.

Foreign Policy

Tazzyn

The Hressan Republic and the Tazzyn have watched each other with some degree of warriness and its clear that the militancy of the Hressan is somewhat driven by the threat of the Tazzyn Empire. Still, there's been no direct confronation, though a thread of Tazzyn foreign policy revolves around keeping the Hressans isolated as much as possible.

Terran

Since their independance, the relationship with the Terrans had seen ups and downs, often to the whims of Tazzyn pressure. Eventually the Hressan Republic joined the CCN alliance in 2607.
