A revolt by the warlords of the Amiro empire brutally put down.

The First Amiro Civil War, also known as the Southern Rebellion, was the first major divide of interests in the empire. The northern kingdoms, loyal to the emperor, wished to push further north and expand their territories. This was resisted by the southern kingdoms who had no interest in these regions and had suffered greatly in the previous expansions.   The actual conflict started when, in a matter of 3 weeks all of the rulers of the kingdoms resisting the Amiro expansion died "peacefully in their sleep". The accuracy of this report is doubted and the southern states pointed out the 'coincidence'. When the northern kingdoms began the invasion, the southern kingdoms ordered them to fall back, suspecting foul play that should not be exploited. When the northern kingdoms continued the attack the south pressed north and seized control of Alturn, capital of the Amiro Empire at the time. The emperor managed to escape Alturn in time and retreated north, meeting an army from the north coming down to recapture Alturn. The resulting battle in the city leveled the entire region and ultimately ended in a six year war. Finally, the southern kingdoms were expelled. They fell back to their own regions, hotly pursued. They were finally hunted down completely and the lords publicly executed.   This event is portray much differently depending on where one is travelling but in general it is safe to avoid the topic in the south and not to bring it up in the north if you sympathize with with south. It has continued to be a matter of contention between the two sides, especially since during the war, the territories that the north had been attempting to reconquer banded together and fought back successfully, taking several key defenses that were not retaken by the Amiro empire for years to come.
