Baygate

Baygate is the capitol of the Island of Astiron, a non-mainland civilisation off the coast of Astrya, and a large hub both for trade and for tourism. Due to both the rare and unique plants on Astiron, and the supposed myth of a hidden, treetop-dwelling race, both tourists and traders flock to Baygate in order to take advantage of the natural resources and breathtaking geography of the coast-based city. While technically not a capitol city within it's own right, as Astiron falls under the borders of Astrya and therefore counts as a province rather than it's own country, Astiron is divided enough by culture and geography that while not having it's own laws or leaders, Baygate is seen as a capitol within both Astryan and Astiron society.

Demographics

The city is practically divided into two; the trade district and the tourist district. The trade district is typically inhabited by merchants, and the inhabitants are usually of a lower class than those who inhabit the tourist district; the tourist district is frequently inhabited by nobility on holiday, while the inns and other accommodation is usually owned and managed by higher members of the peasantry class. Old saying dictates that every third house in Baygate is some form of boarding house, and this is mainly true; either being accommodation for the tourists or simple inns for the travelling merchants who frequent the city to stay in.

Industry & Trade

Trading is the biggest part of the structure of Baygate, with travelling merchants flocking there in large numbers to trade for the unique plants and flora found only in Astiron's forests. The majority of the peasantry class who live in Baygate either own some form of store or stall selling these plants, or are employed in collecting them to be sold.

Geography

Baygate is found on the mainland-facing coast of Astiron, within a natural cove formed within the Island's cliffs. There are some, small beaches along this coast, as most of what would once have been beach is now taken by ports and dockyards.
