Session 96: When Last We Met 9/29/24

General Summary

When last we met, the party was in a pitched battle with 3 mummies inside this crypt. The party learns very quickly that fire is an anti-mummy weapon and use it to great effect to destroy the remaining bandaged corpses. With quiet returned to the crypt once more, Celeste moves about searching through the various containers and chests scattered about the room. Among the various treasures and baubles she finds, one chest in particular holds their prize, If it can be called that. She sees a horrific looking book staring back at her. its very essence a putrid assault on one's senses.
She hands this item over to Vandread who confirms it is The Book of Vile Darkness that they sought. Only problem is it will not leave the chamber with any of them, the party confusedly hands the book from person to person to see if they can put it in various bags of holding and storage to no avail. At this point they are visited by Nyarlathotep, The outer god of mischief. He cheekily informs the party that the book will not go with them while they are not attuned to the book and are of non evil alignments. He says one of the party will have to give up their safety and their humanity for the time being to extract the book from this place.
After much discussion, Mistral pledges himself and puts his life in the hands of fate, attuning to the book of vile darkness. He resists the urge to turn evil but suffers other effects both detrimental and beneificial. With this business sorted, The volunteer Romaia to ask if The entity known as Nyarlathotep will get them out of the temple, preferrably instantaneously. He agrees and gathers the party around him, Where he casts plane shift. Bringing He and the party to his realm. The Far Realm. There, the limits of sanity are pushed to their brink and madness overtakes Mistral and Vandread's Steel defender as Nyarlathotep asks where the party would like to be plane shifted back on their realm. They decide on being brought to the Abraxios academy where The book can be kept safe and studied uninterrupted.
He obliges and they are returned right to the teleportation circle in The Abraxios Academy. The party are instantly surrounded by mages who demand to know why and how they got there. Vandread calls Saraeris the headmistress of the school to come and assist them and she does. Mistral mentions what they have in their posession through a fit of laughter and she brings the party up to her office to discuss this more privately. They explain how and why they took the Book of Vile darkness into their possession. She agrees to let them stay at the school and figure out a way to destroy the book if they promise not to harm the students in any way. They agree and Mistral gets to readin'.
4 days of study pass and He comes with two options of varying viability. The first is the method described by Alhazred in which he remains attuned for 100 years to the book and learns a word to destroy it, along with he himself. The other, is to find a Powerful Celestial such as a Solar or Empyrean to tear the book asunder and destroy it. Though while evil exists in the multiverse, It will return after centuries or Millenia. The group collectively decide on the second option and Celeste recalls their interaction with an Empyrean atop Mount Crom. Though they remember they vowed to not disturb him atop the mountain ever again.
The party begin weighing their options for this. That's where we'll pick up next time!
