Session 40 - When Last We Met - 6.26.23
General Summary
When last we met, the party took their rest inside the Penitent Scholar tavern. They awaken to a humble priest entering the cellar to clean. He introduces himself as Brother Thomas, a cleric of The Faithful Dominion based on his vestments. The party introduce themselves and he informs them that he can contact lady Rosalind for an update using the Sending spell. He does this and relays the message he receives back. That she was successful in bringing down Earl Sommersett, though at great cost. And to come as soon as possible. The party decides that is the most pressing matter and move to pursue this.
Vandread moves to disguise himself and acquire a cart and oxen to allow the party to exit the city quickly and quietly. On his way, he hears the city's denizens gossiping about a vampire attack taking place in the city jail along with a breakout. He buys a cart and oxen off a nearby farmer and brings the ride back to the Penitent Scholar. They make their way out of the city, using the crowds and Celeste's Pass without a trace to disappear into the anonymity of this metropolis and escape safely.
They make their way north to Melduinn. They find the town in an uproar and gathered around the mine. They find Sir Gareth who ushers them inside while holding the throng of people back from getting in. Once inside they find Lady Rosalind, Sir Rolfe in a fugue state, as well as a bound and gagged Earl Sommersett. He exchanges a few mocking words to the party and they respond in kind with cutting words and flying fists.
With nothing to lose, Lord Sommersett reveals that within 3 days time, an attack of some kind will happen in the capital city during a meeting of the country's leadership. But is mum about any further details. The party finally decides to put an end to this agent of Oblivion. Rosalind firmly objects but is soon convinced of the danger of leaving him alive. Her objection outnumbered, She resigns to leave the room and whatever happens while her back is turned is of no concern to her.
Celeste puts an arrow right between the despot's eyes... to then immediately be resuscitated by Vandread. He asks if The Earl has any final words before returning to the void. He simply mocks the party and is once again dispatched by Celeste.
With the knowledge of this impending meeting, The party decides to gain entry by having one of them take on the guise of Earl Sommersett using the Disguise Self spell. They decide the willing doppelganger be Romaia as she expresses her innate abilities to act and impersonate others. Their first test of this will be getting out of the mine and appeasing the crowd outside who are on the verge of rioting. And that's where we pick up next time!
