Retaire is a Demon sympathiser who idealizes the days of the Conquest where unimportant peasants like him could rise the social ladder through ruthlessness. He secretly wishes for the Demons to beat the nobles and their Knights so things could change. His delusions are dangerous, but having Nicholas on your side can be invaluable for Demons on the wrong side of the frontier.
