Whetonstide

Whetonstide is the traditional harvest festival celebrated in the southern Aquatic Kingdoms. It celebrates the gathering and preparation of the final wheat harvest of the season.

History

The festival began in Cape Hildegard and the surrounding communities, but has spread across Cypruvalu, Malakar, and elsewhere in the region.

Components and tools

Wreaths of wheat are made from the first batch of harvested wheat. Some are burnt in offering to the gods, and others are taken home and hung on doors and over hearths. At the end of the season, the seeds from these wreaths are sealed away in a special ceremonial box; these will be the first wheat seeds sown in the fields the following year.(In Malakar, which grows little wheat,

Observance

Whetonstide spans the last week of Libra's reign, starting on 16 October and ending on 23 October.   This typically coincides with the mildest weather and most breathtaking views of fall leaves in Cape Hildegard, making the city a popular tourist destination for Whetonstide. Unfortunately, it is still extremely hot in Malakar during this time of year; hence, Whetonstide is a popular time for the wealthy to go on holiday, particularly to Cape Hildegard. Celebrations are particularly subdued in Obsidian Cove, which loses up to 20% of its population during the week.
