Saunfinia Sea

The Saunfinia Sea is the vast ocean that lies between Belcantas and the Mystic Lands. Sages speculate that it occupies as much as 45-65% of the Material Plane.

Geography

The Saunfinia Sea flows around the Mystic Lands and joins the Elemental Plane of Water in the east. It is bound by the Elemental Plane of Earth in the north, the Elemental Plane of Air in the south, and the continent of Belcantas in the west. A small portion of the ocean flows around the southern edge of Belcantas, towards the Endless Magma at the edge of the Elemental Plane of Fire. Sages believe that, at its creation, the ocean flowed all the way to the magma. Where the two opposing elements met, the ocean cooled the magma into solid land, forming the continent of Belcantas itself.

History

The name of the Saufinia Sea is derived from the Celestial phrase sau'naïn vi'niät, meaning "our gods are neverending," a phrase common in prayers to ocean deities like Poseidon and Leviaetha.   Leviaetha is said to have given birth to the sea, and all ocean waters, during the Age of Tranquility. Thus, it existed thousands of years before any sentient species came into being, and it has been known since antiquity.   Though legends and rumors of people crossing over the sea between Belcantas and the Mystic Lands have persisted since as early as the Age of Anxiety, no recorded journey took place until the voyage of L'invitacion in Y145 Age of Complexity. It took L'invitacion 94 days, in fair weather and with few adverse encounters, to cross from Enchalmida to Amal'qa Point in the Mystic Lands. Though this difficult and dangerous voyage has become more common over the past millennium, no more than a handful of ships per year sail between the two continents even today.

I enjoy how old this ocean is, with its origins (at least for the characters) shrouded in myth. It sounds like a place that is very culturally significant.
