Intellect Devourer

An intellect devourer is a small, relatively weak Aberration best known for feeding on sentience and intelligence. They hunt for Humanoid victims in groups of six to twelve, also called symposiums, possessing the bodies of their victims to better infiltrate mortal society and procure prey for their symposium.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Outside of a host body, an intellect devourer looks like an average-sized brain with four rudimentary lizard-like legs. When inside a host body, an intellect devourer is indistinguishable from any other member of its host's species, though it may act slightly strangely because of its desire for prey.

Behaviour

Intellect devourers are surprisingly social creatures. When not possessing Humanoid bodies, they nest together in groups of roughly six to twelve. As they rest, they like to telepathically share the dreams, memories, and knowledge of their prey among the symposium. Arcanologists believe that this is to ensure proper nutrition between the group, so that an intellect devourer who happens across minds that are too similar (say, members of the same cult) will have access to a variety of intellects instead.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

An intellect devourer has no sense of sight, smell, or hearing, but its sense of touch is extraordinarily fine-tuned. It can sense the minute psychic vibrations of an intelligent Soul from hundreds of feet away, and it uses this precise sense to navigate towards victims.   Once an intellect devourer has drained most of the intelligence from its victim, it can transfer its consciousness from its current brainlike body to its victim's brain, similarly to how a hermit crab transfers between shells. It then uses the size, strength, and nonthreatening appearance of the new body to its advantage, to better lure in brains for other members of its symposium.
