Duchess

A duchess is a noble, typically female, who controls a large territory of land, usually called a duchy (in Scalados, a diocese). The equivalent masculine rank is Duke.
Most duchies are patrilineal in nature, so the title of duchess is most often conferred via marriage. Daughters of a King and Queen, particularly eldest daughters, often enter into arranged marriages with dukes in order to retain positions of power.
