King

A king is a monarch (most typically male) who rules over a kingdom. The feminine equivalent is Queen.
A king who is not head of state is typically referred to as a Prince Consort (sometimes King Consort). Conversely, a king who controls a multinational territory, or has ambitions of doing so, might style himself as an emperor.

Abolition

When a country shifts to a democratic or republican system, the absolute monarch is typically the first position ousted, with the expectation that the powers or appointment methods of lower nobility will fall in line with the new system. The first monarchy fully and permanently abolished in the Age of Complexity was the throne of Voli in Y930, when King Grimoaldo II was replaced by Prime Minister Angie Arrowfern after the events of the Volian Revolution.
An interesting recent case of abolition is that of the Glorious Revolution of 1105. The dynasty that had reigned for the past 450 years was deposed, and the king was replaced with a High Chancellor. He declared himself Emperor in Y1108 upon expanding into Orokhim lands past the Western Duchy, ostensibly due to significant threats along the western border. At the time, he stated that this was a temporary but necessary claim to absolute power in order to defend the sovereignty and safety of Dreibach. However, no election has taken place since.

In various regions

Aquatic Kingdoms

The Aquatic Kingdoms, as the name implies, covers a territory traditionally controlled by multiple kings and queens, often at war with each other. The alliance, which formed shortly before the War of Great Sorrow as a means of self-preservation by the kingdoms, has continued to this day despite the oft-clashing personalities (and sometimes claims) of the kings and queens within.

Draxhaven

Draxhaven consists of three warring kingdoms: the Metallic Dynasty, the Chromatic Dynasty, and the (better name for giant) Dynasty. The kings and/or queens of these dynasties are a Metallic Dragon, a Chromatic Dragon, and a cloud Giant, respectively. The highest ranking humanoids of the nation are the Lord Mayor of Dodiöu Réijmí and the Count of Scalesong Valley.
