Cypruvalu Prison

Cypruvalu Prison was the largest prison in the southern Aquatic Kingdoms, located high in the mountains of Cypruvalu, two days' journey outside of Cape Hildegard. It once housed many of the most notorious criminals in the Aquatic Kingdoms, including the usurper Grimoaldo and the mass murderer The Wolf-Spider. 

Construction

Cypruvalu Prison was built in the late Age of Integrity, designed by a team of dwarvish architects to take full advantage of the security afforded by the mountainous terrain. It was built upstream of a dam in a mountain creek, allowing the reservoir to form a 50-foot-deep, 250-foot-wide moat around the entire structure. The main prison building is mostly underground, with a few guard towers built on for added visibility. The only windows in prisoners' cells are skylights a minimum of 30 feet in the ceiling. Walls are sanded down regularly to make climbing or digging all but impossible.

Antimagic Properties

In its early days, the prison was guarded by the beholder Vokarajan. However, after a Y820 incident where the eye tyrant disintegrated an entire cell block on a whim, the Council of Deans voted to send in the army to kill Vokarajan. After a long struggle, they succeeded, slaying the beholder and removing and preserving his central eye. The eye was then mounted above the central cell block, creating a powerful antimagic field throughout most of the prison. This allowed the use of standard iron manacles instead of antimagic shackles.

Controversy and Closure

The Y1056 escape of The Wolf-Spider brought public attention to the harsh conditions within Cypruvalu Prison. Several reform attempts were made, but in Y1072 the citizens of Cape Hildegard voted to shut down the prison permanently. It now lies abandoned. The eye of Vokarajan was moved to storage in the archives of Hildegard University.
