Bulette

A bulette, sometimes referred to as a land shark or tunneller, is a burrowing Monstrosity with an armor-like carapace. They are known for their extremely efficient digging skills, their deadly long jumping ability, and their ravenous appetite.   Bulettes are an uncommon—though not rare—symbol in heraldry, particularly on the flags and crests of militia. They symbolize strength, perseverance, and retribution. The most famous use of the bulette in heraldry is in the crest of the Chain of Charon, which features a gold bulette on a red field. (The crest's prevalence on the shields and gauntlets of the organization's feared chainguards is the source of the derogatory nickname "bulie," used for the Chain by anti-establishment Dancamortians.)

Basic Information

Anatomy

A bulette is roughly the size of a large grizzly bear. Its legs are short and stout with thick, paddle-shaped claws. The head of a bulette resembles a snapping turtle, with a strong underbite and sharp, serrated edges. Curiously, bulettes have two hearts that sit side-by-side on top of their lungs. It is unclear what purpose this serves in their anatomy.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Bulettes are carnivorous, and anything that moves—including other bulettes—is a potential meal. The favored prey of a bulette is compact, relatively fatty creatures: calves, ponies, capybara, and particularly halflings. The bulettes of lower Erdelan are noticably more interested in livestock than humanoids, unlike their more southern kin; some monstrologists speculate that they dislike the taste of dwarves

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Bulettes have poor eyesight, but a keen sense of touch and hearing that allows them to detect the footsteps of a creature from sixty feet underground.
