It's good practice for those starting their adventuring career to become familiar with the weapon grading system. The system itself originated in Stonewood, during the kingdom's first economic boom, as more and more craftspeople made livings out of creating and selling equipment.

With the increasing importance of such trades, a reliable method of quality assurance quickly became necessary. Smiths particularly proud of their work can have their equipment appraised and graded against a strict set of guidelines that, if passed, assign a rank between 1 and 10. The highest score that non-magical equipment can achieve is Rank 1; while magical equipment is further scored based on the strength of its magical properties. A rank higher than 10 is possible, but extremely rare.

So what does this mean for you? A few things actually. A simple Rank 1 is often the first significant upgrade an adventurer will experience on their journey, but they often don't really understand what that means and assume a low rank is poorer quality. So to clarify things, "Perfection plus One" became a popular interpretation to tell newcomers. This stuck, so just saying +1 became commonplace. "Perfection plus One" was the best way to describe it, really. A weapon, a piece of armor, or something as simple as a rope or bedroll so masterfully crafted that it deserves to be in its own tier entirely. A work so prestigious that the only method of improvement is through magical means!
