Frost Spider

The frost spider was a breed of giant spider, well-suited to cold environments. Native to arctic caves and forests, they resembled their temperature cousins in size and shape, save for their white fur and red eyes. They wove webs just as other spiders did but these webs quickly crystalized very quickly and so appeared sheathed with ice.

Appearance

Compared to a normal spider, a frost spider was enormous, its body nearly five feet long. Thanks to its host of enormous legs, however, it appeared even larger, almost ten feet long. Despite its prodigious spider, the frost spider was surprisingly lightweight and able to climb vertically up surfaces with ease. Its thick white pelt was composed not truly of fur but instead of sharp bristles, coarse to the touch. Their host of eight eyes blazed red.
Their poisonous bites were cold enough to chill the blood and the webs they spun quickly froze upon contact with the air, freezing anyone they came into contact with.

Behavior

Ambush predators, frost spiders preferred to attack their prey from above. They descended on silken lines to ensnare and bear away their food into the overhanging trees or cavern heights. Once a victim was tangled in their frosty webs, the spiders would inject them with poison, freezing the blood and preserving them for later consumption.
Frost spiders typically spun large webs, often spanning between alpine trees or cliff ledges, from which to dangle their prey. They were solitary hunters but, when young, would often band together in small hunting packs, to help them compensate for their inexperience.

• Khûm: Traversing the Firewood, the Commander's Tent encountered a hunting pack of young frost spiders, snaring both Umber and young Grawmor in their webs before they were driven off (Chapter 10).
