Brucolac

A brucolac was a type of vampire spawn created from a beast, rather than a humanoid. While unintelligent, they nonetheless shared many other traits commonly associated with vampires.

Description

A brucolac's physical appearance could vary greatly, dependent entirely on what manner of beast it was in life. A brucolac made from a wolf might be silver-gray, while one made from a leopard or hyena might be covered in spots. Regardless of its original form, the transformation – inside a cocoon made from the creature's own saliva – turns the brucolac into an enormous bat-like monstrosity, complete with leathery wings, pointed ears and a poisonous bite.   Brucolacs shared a number of traits with their creators. They drank blood, their flesh regenerated, they transformed into mist when defeated and they were weak to the same things a traditional vampire was – sunlight, running water and wooden stakes. Despite this, there were a number of distinctions, including both their saliva and their cocoon.   Rather than a sarcophagus, a brucolac regenerated inside a cocoon made from saliva. That saliva, when pumped into a victim, created a desperate need for more saliva, allowing the brucolac to repeatedly draw blood from the same creatures. A brucolac could also screech at a frequency that addled the mind of most humanoids, creating an effect similar to the confusion spell.

Behavior

Like any vampire spawn, a brucolac was utterly devoted to the vampire that originally created it. While many brucolacs served their creator's will, many were made out of desperation or starvation, as vampires universally preferred the taste of sentient blood. These brucolac were then occasionally set loose, to hunt and feed at their own discretion, rather than at the command of their vampire lord.   Like any ambush predator, a brucolac would descend on its unsuspecting prey from the air, fill them full of poison and often flap away. Then, the need for another bite drove the prey – oftentimes livestock – to return to the brucolac, making its job that much easier. They often made their cocoons in damp and dark places, where they could hide from the sun and regenerate in peace.
