Bride-To-Be

The Bride-To-Be was a title given to the leader of the Sanguine, the pro-vampire insurgency in Izla at the start of the Second Age. Held by various human women over the decade of the Sanguine's existence, the title conferred complete control over the cult's movements and all its members.

Name

The title referred to the figure's future as Caliphar II's consort. According to Sanguine dogma, all three of the individuals to hold the title each ascended to the role of vampire bride and consort to Caliphar II. Once they'd done this, however, they list their position as leader of the Sanguine – until another mortal caught the vampire's eye.

Position

As Caliphar II's chosen, the Bride-To-Be ruled with absolute authority – and absolute anonymity. Only the other brides knew their true identity but all Sanguine, no matter how high-ranked, must serve them. Only Caliphar II himself was supposedly above the Bride-To-Be. Many believed the unseen vampire lord passed messages to her, guiding the resistance's actions from afar.   Despite their absolute authority, there was nonetheless frequently tension between the various brides of Caliphar II. Once ascended to the lofty heights of vampirism, many of his previous brides resented the idea of serving a mere mortal.

History

The first Bride-To-Be rose to prominence at the same time as the movement itself in 55 2A, two decades after Caliphar II's fall. The original Bride was credited with constructing the entire resistance, both organizing and managing all the scattered malcontents across Izla. Rumor persisted that the first Bride-To-Be did not even know whether Caliphar II survived but sought instead to avenge his memory. Imagine her surprise when Caliphar II blessed her with vampirism.   The following two Brides-To-Be were believed to expand the organization's reach and influence. The second Bride militarized the movement and began to strike more directly at Vhakizla's forces. The third Bride innovated the drug slaver, as a means to convert more of the public to the vampire's sway. Both passed from mortality into vampirism in their time.   By 67 2A, there was a fourth Bride-To-Be in command of the Sanguine. Little was known about her before she took the position. The most mysterious of the four Brides, she kept to the shadows and kept her plans secret.
