Arcadian

Written by Brendan Gasparin

Arcadian is the ancient language of the elvari, and is still used as a primary language by most Arcanari. They claim the language has remained largely unchanged for thousands of years.   Arcadian is extremely good at expressing complicated thoughts and concepts, and is also extremely efficient as a verbal spell component for capturing and controlling the essence of magic. Many spells with verbal components are spoken in Arcadian, whether or not the caster understands the root of the words, and wizards who wish to create new spells must often learn a measure of Arcadian to do so. Unfortunately, the study of the Arcadian language can be as difficult as the study of magic itself to those who are not Arcanari.

Writing System

Arcadian is an elegant, flowing language with a script that is complicated and difficult to memorise for all but the Arcanari (and perhaps the gnomes).   The Arcadian script is also called Arcadian. It is a visually fluid and beautiful language incorporating symbols, shapes, and diagrams to communicate verbal, mathematical, musical, and magical concepts. Arcadian may be written with ink, but many Arcanari can also draw on any surface (or in the air) in a magical glowing script using a cantrip and their fingers.   Simple messages in Arcadian can be easy enough to read, but songs and spells and mathematical equations are represented with complex symbols in strange patterns and nuanced interactions between different characters. It is difficult for the mind of anyone but a native Arcanari with life-long experience as a natural speaker of Arcadian to comprehend the full extent, size, and complexity of the language.
