Session 12: Mind Games Report in Olquen | World Anvil

Session 12: Mind Games

General Summary

The party began the session by delving into the Underdark on their mission to stop the Duergar attacks and determine their relationship to Sartuen and The Midnight .   They travelled east through the tunnels based on Laz's general familiarity with this part of the Underdark, eventually finding their way to an intersection with a main "highway" that would lead them to either Anethemar to the north or Gogh Ulum to the south. Before heading down the highway toward Gogh Ulum they decided to find a hidden spot and camp for the evening. The watch went by rather uneventfully but Arlox used the opportunity to grill Laz on his past. Relatively forthcoming, Laz explained where he came from and the business his father was in, albeit euphemistically.   The next day, the party continued southward through the massive tunnel only to be stymied by an apparent infinite forge which completely blocked their path. Xenik was able to search about and find a small side tunnel which was "hidden" by some plants which were incongruous with the surroundings. The party saw no other choice than to cautiously follow this tunnel and they quickly came into a cavern , somewhat long and narrow. The cavern contained 8 rows of braziers, four abreast, each glowing with a blue flame. Beyond the braziers was a strange creature that Laz was able to identify as a Mind Flayer, one of the Illithid. The Mindflayer introduced itself as Torigux via telepathy and invited the party to play his game. His lightly veiled insinuations indicated that losing the game would lead to him eating each member of the party.   Gamely, Zanzibar faced the challenge, in a game quite similar to the board game, Mastermind. Using excellent logic and a bit of luck, the party was able to defeat the game on the last row before certain death. A disappointed, but impressed, Torigux invited the party to have a true meal with him and sent them on their way with a brand new Bag of Holding as reward for their win. They exited his cavern to find that the chasm was actually an elaborate illusion to force travelers into his cave whenever he was hungry.   After another day of travel the party finds itself being trailed by a strange moaning noise. They continue on but are eventually ambushed by a strange creature known as a Cloaker. They are able to dispatch the Cloaker with relative ease and proceed along their way.   Near the end of the session they arrive at a split in the tunnel with a rickety barricade and a sign in Undercommon that says 'Certain Death' with an arrow to the right, and 'Totally Safe' with an arrow to the left....
