Session 11: Once Upon a Foggy Evening

General Summary

The party began the session in a fight with a pair of angry ghosts who had already managed to Frighten Arlox and . Not very long into the battle Thark pulled another disappearing act, presumably back into his tankard, but unlike other times he was replaced by a young halfling woman named Qira. She spent the rest of the battle unconscious but stable and the party left her alone while they took care of the ghosts.   Following the battle they healed Qira a little bit and began to question her and where she came from. She appeared confused and a bit frightened but overall was in good shape. She had been delving in a dungeon near Waterdeep in Faerun on the planet of Toril in an entirely different Crystal Sphere of the multiverse. How or why she appeared here is a mystery to the party and Qira. Nevertheless, she saw her only option to be continuing with the party for the time being and quickly became just another member.   The party then investigated the cave-in near where they fought the ghosts and after some investigation, including by Arlox in gaseous form, they slowly cleared the rubble and made their way into a hidden room that had clearly been a death trap for its two occupants when the area collapsed and sealed them in. Three chests were found here, all locked, and one trapped. Arlox failed his investigation on the trapped chest and it exploded in Laz's face but otherwise they were able to open the chests and find much loot inside.   They continue exploring the area where the mine broke through into the top levels of the Underdark and search a water filled cave with water trickling in, presumably from the surface, and a waterfall that plunges deep below this cavern. Laz explored the water to the east where it was coming in but found nothing of interest. He then started moving towards the west and realized it was getting deeper towards the waterfall. Arlox wanted to explore some strange crystals that were clustered around the falls, noting they were magical, unlike the crystals in the levels above. He misty stepped over to the crystals and chipped off some pieces, checked out the waterfall and then misty stepped back to the shore. The party then took a long rest as night has fallen.   Through the watch they worked on identifying the various treasures they found the day before and they woke up and shared what they had found. They then proceeded back towards the front of the mine to take the ramp down to the level below.   The party entered a massive cavern where they could not see the far side. They saw another underground lake a ways below them, covered in misty fog. Stretching before them was a ~150ft wooden rope bridge which they could not even see the middle. The party tied themselves together, save for Xenik, and began to cross. The further out they got the more the wood was wet from the swirling fog and around 45 feet from the edge the roped together members of the party all managed to slip, except for Qira who braced her legs and prevented them from all slipping over the edge. Laz was dangling down near the water's surface and Xenik used his wings to fly forward and save him. While dangling, Laz was able to see some sort of figure in the mist. The party proceeded across the bridge and almost slipped once more and Xenik had to once again swoop to catch Laz. This second slip caused the creature to emerge and attack.   The party fought and killed the Air Elemental Myrmidon despite their mission to capture and return it. They then proceeded over the rest of the bridge, finding themselves on the edge of a strange ring of rocks in the middle of the lake where a sunken island, protected from the water by a dike of stone, contained a strange stone house which was clearly out of place.   Laz proceeds down the stairs towards the house, but trips and falls down them, making a racket. The door of the house creaks open an inch or two but nobody is seen. Laz tries to peer in the door but sees nothing so he moves around the house to a window. Suddenly a Shadow Demon surges through the window and attacks. Several rounds in Laz is knocked unconscious but is healed before he needs to worry about any death saves. The party defeats the demon and then enters the house where they find Sartuen. They fight her but when they clearly are close to killing her gets unlucky and missed her stunning strike so Sartuen takes the opportunity to go invisible and disappears. They next see her at the top of the stairs behind them sending an ugly poisonous cloud in their direction before fleeing. Laz uses Gust of Wind several times to clear the cloud but by this time she is long gone.   The party then searches the house, finds a locked chest and a locked trap door underneath the bed. They find loot in the chest and then Laz opens the trap door, clearly recognizing the entrance to the Underdark. They take a long rest before proceeding and we end the session.
