Saint Arnoris

Patron of wardens and aquatic warriors, Saint Arnoris is renowned as a skilled combatant and defender. His beliefs are similar to those of his peers, focusing on the protection of others by way of martial skill and physical might, but Arnoris specifically specializes in the imprisonment of evil creatures or the erecting of impassible walls to keep them out. There are many beings of power so great or prestige so massive that outright killing them isn't an option. In such cases, Arnoris promotes locking them away and tossing the key, protecting the masses by separating them from the problem at hand and erecting impenetrable walls between the two. Alternatively, it is better to just not fight them at all, and place some immovable object between the problem and the masses.

These ideals are integral to his mythos, as they are the reason he lost his life. During the early days of the Age of Chaos, a titanic entity known as Hir Krauk invaded Genaeth from the unknowable blackness beyond the Astral Sea. Landing within the ocean west of Ceren, the ancient aberration formed a worldwide stranglehold on the oceans and seas, pushing forward hundreds of aboleths and legions of their chuul underlings. It was only the might of the entire Triton race, with Saint Arnoris at the head, that allowed them to be fought back and halted. At the end of this conflict, Arnoris gave his life to seal away the monster within the Triton Sea. Since then, the tritons that reside therein work to maintain the imprisonments and halt the occasional resurgence made by the aboleth conclaves that still dot the waters.

Holidays

Saint Arnoris' Day: Taking place on the 5th of Haught, Saint Arnoris' Day is a holiday of vigilance and protection. It is common for soldiers to maintain their posts all day and night, with no able-bodied troop being allowed a day off. This adherence to duty is not purely ceremonial however. It is the day when Hir Krauk first touched down in the Triton Sea, and has since been shown to be a day where the boundaries between realms grow weaker than usual. Summoners and cults often use this day to pierce these boundaries and pull creatures to Genaeth, and as such the sentinels that guard against those creatures must be ready for anything.

Physical Description

Identifying Characteristics

Depictions of Saint Arnoris usually show him as an athletic example of a triton, wearing only basic armor or none at all. His scales are usually shown as slate grey with a hint of blue, with his fins being a similarly muted gold color. To accent this, his eyes and sometimes veins always give off a faint golden glow. Most depictions of him show him wearing vestments common to triton, as opposed to the heavy and water-trapping cloths of the surfaces.   In addition, almost all depictions of him involve his legendary trident Riptide, though it is said his trident was lost with him when he went missing.

Mental characteristics

Intellectual Characteristics

Considered a masterful tactician, Arnoris excels in matters of defense and fortification. He was attributed with creating the designs for many powerful prisons (most of which still stand in the current age), and helped lock away many threats to the public before they could cause any greater trouble. It was such knowledge that allowed him to fight off Hir Krauk and seal it away, though no prison lasts forever.

Morality & Philosophy

Arnoris promotes the protection of others by locking away that which would threaten them, either in cells or behind walls. He provides wards to those who choose defensive tactics over offensive, playing the long game and striking once the attackers are drained and unable to effectively defend themselves. This strategy has caused many of his clergy to become seen as sedentary turtles who would rather sit on their hands than do anything proactive about their problems, but such generalizations are never fully true.

Those who follow the teachings or beliefs of Saint Arnoris for long enough are able to gain his personal boon in the form of his feat, enabling them to only further his tenets and dogma. Those who have proved worthy gain the following traits.   Liquid Movements: You've become accustomed to an aquatic lifestyle. You gain a swim speed of 30 feet per round, though it is reduced by 10 feet if you are wearing heavy armor. If you already have a swim speed, increase it by 15 feet. In addition, you can hold your breath for ten times the period you normally would be able to.   Sentinel of the Deep: You've been trained in sub-surface fighting. When you attack with a melee weapon while swimming, you may use a bonus action to move up to your swim speed, without provoking opportunity attacks.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Saint Argentaeus: Arnoris and Argentaeus are known to have respected one-another, but weren't very close. Argentaeus consulted her brother-saint in matters of defense, and on the odd occasion when Arnoris has to act as a king, and not a general, he would lean on the teachings Argentaeus gave to him. Beyond these interactions though, their difference in locals and interests kept them quite far apart.   Saint Vetterlund: Saint Arnoris holds a great deal of respect for his saint-brother, as many of the oaths his triton swear to defend the realms are taken from ideals held by Saint Vetterlund. His willingness to go out of his way to protect others on the grounds of chivalry and honor were always praised by Arnoris, and the two were known to frequently communicate and share tactics among eachother when time allowed. When Vetterlund went missing during the War of Giants, Arnoris is said to have spent a whole month in mourning.
