Triton

A race of aquatic knights and noble amphibians, Triton have guarded the (aptly named) Triton Sea since the gods walked among mortals. Though some have mixed with land-based races multiple times, most Tritons remain with their clans in the Western sea for the entirety of their lives, working endlessly to keep the horrors of the deep far from the surface. However, this lineage of honor has left many Triton with a rather large ego, something they rarely attempt to hide.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Triton have the standard humanoid array of limbs, though their arms and legs sport webbed digits and semi-retractable fins. Their bones are noticeably lighter than most races of a similar size, and many of their joints are more flexible than most races.

Genetics and Reproduction

Triton give birth to live children, and reach maturity fairly fast. They only breed during certain times of the year, and each brood of children is raised away from their parents by communal teachers.

Growth Rate & Stages

Once they reach maturity at the age of ten, a Triton is assigned a certain position in their local bastion. Most stay there for the remainder of their lives, some of which can last two centuries.

Ecology and Habitats

Due to their nature, the average Triton feels most at home when they are fully submerged in water. However, they are able to live outside water with little issue, though doing so for extended periods of time without taking a dip has been known to leave them rather lethargic.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Triton are primarily carnivorous, and tend to prefer lighter meats like fish and poultry. They can eat other foods, but they usually don't take to their stomachs very well.

Additional Information

Facial characteristics

Most Triton have relatively soft features, with slight noses and high cheekbones. Their small ears resemble fins, and all Triton possess a variety of decorative fins in favor of actual hair. The design and color of these fins can vary greatly, as Triton can resemble a wide variety of fish.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

About 90% of Triton in the world live within or near the Triton Sea, as it is their traditional homeland. Beyond that, they are rarely found far from large bodies of water.

Average Intelligence

Given that their society constantly deals with complex tactics and stratagems, most of the higher ranking Triton are quite intelligent. Those of lower stations can be any form of intelligence, with many living away from their kin being comparably simpler to those fully raised in the Triton.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Being acclimated to both shallow and deep waters, Triton are able to function at any depth above or below the sea. This includes being able to hear better underwater and see in darkened environments. As for magical capabilities, the very historic lineage of Triton make most embrace divine magic far more often than arcane.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

While they usually have nicknames during adolescence, all Triton are given an official name upon reaching maturity. After this, they tend to have two surnames, one denoting a rank in their enclave and the other identifying said enclave. The first is primarily used among other Triton, while the second is more prominent among those outside their home.

Major Organizations

While it has no singular name, the complex series of underwater holdouts and fortresses that the Triton maintain within the Triton Sea act as the closest thing they have to a unified government or state. Most deal only with their own enclaves and only work with others when required, causing each one to have it's own name and style of operation.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

Most Triton are taught Common for interspecies relations, but prefer to use Aquan when talking among eachother.

Common Dress Code

Due to their reliance on fluid movements, most Triton only wear the barest-minimum in terms of clothing. They usually mimic the chosen style of surface-dwellers nearest to their enclave, but keep the layers and intricacy to a minimum. Any armor worn by Triton follow a similar pattern, though they are known for crafting specialized scale mail that doesn't encumber their movement above or below the waves.

Historical Figures

Saint Arnoris: Patron saint of the Triton and aquatic warriors or sentinels. Considered the greatest hero to ever grace the Triton Sea, Saint Arnoris lead numerous campaigns against sahuagin, merrow, and lurking abberations that crawled towards the surface. His last known feat involved him foiling the plot of an ancient kraken and a cult dedicated to it, a massive endeavor that left the cult crippled and Saint Arnoris fallen in honorable combat. However, his mighty trident was lost in the conflict, and many a treasure-seeker has sought to track down and recover this priceless artifact.   Sir Piran Jharan: Female warrior who left her enclave and gained notoriety during the Draco-Jotnar War. Most notably, she was a member of the Order of the Metal Claw, and was often dubbed the Bronze Knight or the Fourth Dragonknight. She was known for seeking justice and heroism above all else, though her hot-headed nature caused her to overstep her station more times than once. She was bonded with the bronze dragon Sankochinon, wielded the legendary spear Maelstrom throughout the war, and disappeared alongside the rest of her order during the Age of Turmoil.

Common Myths and Legends

It is common knowledge among the Triton that they were created by the goddess Melora to ensure the depths of the sea maintain a sense of balance and order. They also have a number of legends surrounding their racial patron, Saint Arnoris, and his many campaigns against the terrors of the deep.
