Castle Zagyg
Perched atop a blighted berm overlooking the flow of the Selintan River, the ruins of Castle Zagyg stand as a grim testament to the power and insanity of its former master, the Mad Archmage Zagyg Yragerne. For centuries, this dread edifice echoed with arcane experiments and the tormented screams of the magically twisted. Now, only crumbling stone, vine-choked walls, and the whisper of unnatural magic remain above ground. The castle itself sprawls across several acres, its once-imposing structure now scarred by time and decay. High, broken walls still define its perimeter, punctuated by the looming silhouettes of ruined bastions.
Two prominent towers pierce the skyline: the main *Tower of Zagyg*, its upper reaches lost to the elements, and two lesser, yet still formidable, towers known as the *War Tower* and the *Tower of Magic (or Power Tower)*, their conical roofs showing gaping wounds. A dilapidated manse clings precariously to the jumbled cliffs nearby. An unsettling aura permeates the ruins, a palpable sense of ancient, expectant, frenzied, and utterly deranged magic. It feels as though the very stones resist being swallowed by the abyss. Gaping fissures and dark caves riddle the berm upon which the castle sits, silent maws that hint at the vast and terrifying labyrinth that lies beneath. These are the legendary dungeons of Zagyg, delved by the mad mage's own hand – a sprawling network rumored to descend at least seventeen levels into the earth, a chaotic menagerie of the absurd, filled with bizarre creatures, intricate traps, and environments that defy logic. These storied layers of nightmare and madness await any who dare to delve into the darkness beneath Castle Zagyg.
The surrounding countryside, known as the *East Mark*, stretches in a vast and rolling expanse from the Glittering Knobs to the Uplands and the Lonely Valley. The fortified cities of Greyhawk and *Yggsburgh* offers a semblance of civilization nearby, a potential refuge or point of resupply for those brave (or foolish) enough to explore the haunted ruins and the terrors below. The East Mark itself encompasses over 1500 square miles, dotted with numerous other locales, each holding its own secrets and potential for adventure.
